Operating Room Registered Nurse Position

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Under the guidance of the OR Manager or designated authority, the Operating Room Registered Nurse is tasked with delivering intra-operative patient care in alignment with established nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and the institution's core values. This role encompasses both direct and indirect patient care across various age groups, employing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with facility protocols.

Administrative duties include physician engagement, cost management, and compliance with staffing schedules. The nurse may oversee other Registered Nurses and direct support staff in the operating room and central processing areas. Additionally, this position involves assisting with administrative responsibilities related to Risk Management, Infection Control, Performance Improvement, and Clinical Recruitment/Retention. Collaborating with nursing leadership, the OR Nurse may also aid in the formulation and execution of policies and procedures to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, and cost-effective care.

Professional demeanor and appearance are essential, along with maintaining patient, coworker, and facility confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations. The nurse is expected to report any known or suspected violations of laws, regulations, or the facility's Code of Conduct. Continuing education requirements must be fulfilled annually.

Patient Demographics:

The patient demographic served includes individuals aged 12 years and older, encompassing adult to geriatric patients who require or seek surgical interventions.

Physical Demands:

May be required to lift up to 50 pounds independently or up to 150 pounds with assistance. The role involves medium physical demands, with a significant amount of walking or standing during shifts. Visual and auditory acuity, along with manual dexterity, are critical for performing designated tasks. The work environment is clean, well-lit, and may involve exposure to unpleasant sights, odors, and stressful situations. Irregular hours may be necessary based on job requirements.

OSHA Exposure Classification:

Job Category I, involving direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids, necessitating adherence to standard precautions and the use of personal protective equipment.

Qualifications:
  • Eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program with current Texas State Board of Nursing licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • BLS & ACLS certification required within 30 days of hire; PALS certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the Operating Room or critical care nursing environment.
  • Familiarity with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the field.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and standards set by state, federal, and accrediting bodies.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English; proficiency in additional languages is preferred.
  • Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions.
  • Willingness to engage in goal-setting and educational activities for personal and professional development.
  • Basic computer literacy required for essential job functions.


Duties and Responsibilities:

PEOPLE

  1. Adheres to staffing schedules and attendance policies, cooperating with daily assignments.
  2. Demonstrates teamwork and appropriate delegation while supervising ancillary personnel in patient care planning and implementation.
  3. Provides direct patient care in clinical settings, showcasing clinical competence.
  4. Participates in the orientation of new staff and peer evaluation processes, ensuring alignment with the facility's mission and values.
  5. Exhibits problem-solving skills and maintains focus on improving patient care.
  6. Willingness to educate others and participate in competency programs.
  7. Completes required training in a timely manner.
  8. Engages in all departmental and facility staff meetings for educational purposes.

SERVICE

  1. Exhibits effective communication skills with staff, management, physicians, patients, and families.
  2. Maintains exceptional service standards for all customers, including physicians and patients.
  3. Participates in physician-oriented service teams.
  4. Takes ownership of service recovery, keeping customers informed and providing assistance throughout the process.
  5. Models professional interactions with all stakeholders to ensure high service levels.
  6. Prepares for cases based on preference cards and specific patient needs.
  7. Communicates necessary changes to preference cards.
  8. Transfers intra-operative care information to PACU staff upon patient transfer.

QUALITY

  1. Initiates comprehensive assessments and pre-operative care plans, verifying informed consent.
  2. Conducts pre-operative record reviews and interviews to address intra-operative patient needs.
  3. Participates in site marking and timeout procedures as per policy.
  4. Ensures quality clinical care through participation in benchmarking programs.
  5. Adheres to facility clinical policies and procedures.
  6. Maintains a safe operating room environment, complying with all safety requirements.
  7. Engages in performance improvement initiatives.
  8. Ensures accurate and compliant medical record documentation.

FINANCE

  1. Conserves resources and minimizes costs where feasible.
  2. Assists in implementing cost-saving initiatives within the department.
  3. Communicates ideas for cost containment and expense reduction.
  4. Maintains appropriate staffing levels and minimizes overtime.
  5. Completes medical record documentation and implant logs accurately for all cases.

GROWTH

  1. Contributes to facility growth through competency and customer service.
  2. Actively participates in emergency drills.
  3. Expands knowledge through seminars and in-services.
  4. Communicates service line development ideas with leadership.
  5. Engages in customer service discussions with physicians to support facility marketing initiatives.
Education Required:
  • Associate's degree or higher in Nursing.
