Job Description

Hennessy & Roach is seeking a skilled Paralegal to join our team in Overland Park, KS.

The Paralegal role is a critical component of our legal team, enhancing attorneys' effectiveness by developing case information, evidence, and settlement options, tracking cases, and supporting attorneys' hearing proceedings.

This position will support multiple attorneys with the preparation of documents for Workers' Compensation, General liability, and Civil Litigation cases. The Paralegal will also be responsible for billing hours to clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist attorneys in preparation for hearings and trials by preparing legal documents, such as legal arguments, motions, contracts, and agreements.
  • Investigate and fact-find for cases, identifying relevant legal articles, laws, and judicial decisions.
  • Organize and maintain files, monitor calendars, meet deadlines, document actions, and input information into file database and case management software.
  • Develop cases by maintaining contact with people involved in the case, scheduling depositions, assisting with discovery requests and responses, requesting medical records, scheduling IMEs, preparing and filing pleadings.
  • Enhance hearing preparations and proceedings by organizing evidence, preparing exhibits, scheduling witnesses, and ensuring that witnesses are ready when needed.
  • Transcribe dictation, complete daily mailings, maintain firm calendar, and coordinate court appearances and out-of-town travel.
  • Accomplish organizational goals, accept new and different requests, and explore opportunities to add value to efficiency and effectiveness of job responsibilities.
  • Monitor and review government regulations.
  • Monitor billable hours and submit hours in Perfect Law software.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Paralegal certificate required. Certification from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) or the American Alliance Certified Paralegal (AACP) credential offered by the American Alliance of Paralegals, Inc. is highly preferred.
  • Associate degree or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 1-2+ years of Legal Assistant or Paralegal experience supporting a legal office.
  • Must have experience e-filing in Kansas.
  • Working knowledge of legal principles and practices. In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of legal research techniques and legal terminology.
  • Microsoft Word experience required; Excel and PowerPoint experience preferred. Perfect Law legal software experience preferred.
  • Outstanding organizational, interpersonal, research, and administrative skills.
  • Excellent telephone, writing, and proofreading skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to meet deadlines under pressure.
