Position Summary:

Under the general oversight of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the Respiratory Care Specialist provides essential life-support, resuscitation, monitoring, and various therapeutic gas treatments to patients. This role is crucial in assisting individuals of all ages who are dealing with acute and chronic health conditions, guiding them towards a more productive lifestyle through education and the application of diverse therapeutic methods.

The specialist may conduct diagnostic assessments and monitoring using spirometry at the bedside and in collaboration with physician directives for pulmonary function evaluations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop care plans, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Patient care constitutes the entirety of work hours.
  • Delegate patient care tasks appropriately to support staff, including Respiratory Therapists and students, while providing necessary guidance and communication.
  • Engage with colleagues and other professionals, including physicians and nursing staff, to ensure optimal patient care. Actively participate in daily bedside rounds.
  • Uphold high standards of clinical excellence in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in various departmental specialties, clinical areas, and life-support equipment as assigned. Exhibit competency in special procedures and protocols across multiple locations as required.
  • Administer various therapeutic modalities as prescribed by physicians or established protocols, ensuring maximum benefit and patient safety.
  • Deliver and monitor medical gases as per physician orders and established protocols, utilizing appropriate delivery devices.
  • Evaluate the pulmonary status of patients, communicate clinical findings to physicians, and recommend suitable therapies. Clearly explain procedures and equipment to patients.
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation by providing basic life support and assess patient responses to clinical interventions.
  • Collect and analyze arterial and capillary blood samples, verify and interpret results, and document findings for physician communication.
  • Perform specific duties as assigned, which may include equipment maintenance, cleaning, and testing.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.

Must hold a Florida Registered Respiratory Therapist license or be eligible for state licensure.

A Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy is preferred; an Associate of Science degree is the minimum requirement.

  • Recent graduates of a Respiratory Therapy program or those with two years of recent experience in a tertiary hospital are encouraged to apply.
  • Current Respiratory Therapist License from the state of practice is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of the National Board of Respiratory Care registration examination is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials are necessary.
  • A valid BLS card from AHA is required before the start date (must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the start date).
  • No prior work experience is necessary.
