POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the school leadership and special education administration, the specialized education instructor delivers direct teaching and assistance to students with disabilities while collaborating closely with general education colleagues.

Serves as the primary coordinator in the formulation of Individual Education Programs (IEP) and oversees all necessary documentation for effective implementation.

Creates a supportive atmosphere conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth of all students, ensuring success for each individual.

Supervises students across various educational settings, assesses and monitors student progress, and engages with students, parents, staff, and the community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional strategies and resources to cater to the diverse needs of all learners.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.

The specialized education instructor's role encompasses providing both direct teaching and instructional support to students with disabilities.

2. Prepares for IEP/RTI team meetings and manages cases for assigned students with disabilities. Participates as a member of the SST/IEP team as needed. (*)
3. Analyzes both formal and informal assessments to inform instructional decisions. Gathers data on student performance to enhance educational outcomes and direct teaching. Administers and interprets formal assessments as required and maintains student portfolios with up-to-date educational data. (*)
4. Chooses and modifies materials to help students with disabilities access the general education curriculum. (*)
5.

Engages in professional development activities aimed at enhancing teaching knowledge in instructional strategies, best practices, and differentiated instruction.

Stays informed on changes in educational policy and other relevant information to improve classroom instruction and programming for students with disabilities.

6. Oversees and plans for the ongoing professional development of paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom. (*)
7. Provides an instructional program tailored to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities.

8. Regularly reviews students with learning disabilities, seeking assistance from central office staff as necessary.

Contributes to students' IEPs as needed, including the use of diagnostic programs.
9. Ensures all necessary safety measures are in place to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
10. Maintains accurate and complete records as mandated by law and administrative regulations. (*)

Assists administration in enforcing all policies and rules governing student conduct and behavior, developing reasonable classroom behavior guidelines, and maintaining order in a fair manner.

Provides availability to students and parents for educational purposes outside of instructional hours when required or requested.

13. Fosters relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and the community that demonstrate respect for every individual.
14. Plans and supervises meaningful assignments for instructional assistants and volunteers.
15. May evaluate the performance of paraprofessionals in collaboration with department heads and/or administrators.
16. Assesses personal effectiveness and demonstrates successful application of acquired skills to enhance performance. Strives for continuous professional growth.
17. Participates in school management and shares responsibility for the overall school program.
18. Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required.
19. Meets deadlines for annual reviews and eligibility assessments. (*)
20. Assists students with various needs as appropriate, including personal care tasks.
21. Provides necessary health services to enable students to benefit from educational opportunities, including specialized medical care as required.
22. Completes all required documentation in compliance with established timelines.

Maintains fair and accurate grading policies, attendance records, and digital communication as required by the technology systems in place.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Familiarity with the curriculum for the relevant grade/content area and the special education program.

Comprehensive understanding of Individual Education Programs (IEP), learning theories, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, multicultural education, assessments, and relevant state and federal policies regarding students with disabilities.

Provides instructional support in inclusive settings as needed. Demonstrates strong communication skills and the ability to adapt instructional programs effectively.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor's degree in special education or a related field is preferred. Knowledge of learning theories, differentiated instruction, child development, behavior management, and assessment practices is essential. Experience in teaching elementary reading and math is necessary for elementary positions. Relevant student teaching or two years of teaching experience in special education is desirable.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must meet state certification requirements in the appropriate educational field.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to navigate the classroom environment, including bending, standing for extended periods, and lifting objects up to 20 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside of regular instructional hours may be required.
