Job Summary
The Perioperative Surgical Assistant will play a vital role in supporting the Operating Room team with specific routine clinical activities. This individual will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse during surgical procedures, ensuring that optimal patient care is provided.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Operating Room team with setting up daily procedure rooms, adhering to established surgical protocols and physician preferences.
- Turn over procedure rooms in a timely manner, ensuring a smooth transition between procedures.
- Prepare surgical equipment and instruments for specific procedures, demonstrating knowledge of aseptic technique.
- Circulate regularly throughout the unit to assist nurses and physicians as needed in pre-, intra-, and post-procedure environments.
- Escort patients into procedure rooms and obtain baseline vital signs, connecting patients to monitoring equipment as necessary.
- Under the review of the RN, obtain pre-procedure data, including height, weight, allergies, NPO status, post-procedure ride contact, and call back number.
- Assist during procedures as appropriate, assuming responsibilities specific to the role of the Patient Care Technician.
- Properly collect, handle, label, and transport specimens in accordance with policy.
- Clean and disinfect all surgical equipment, utilizing sterilization techniques and asepsis.
- Assist the nursing staff in transferring the patient to the Recovery Room.
- Communicate order supplies and needs with other departments.
- Participate in restocking of rooms and checking and cleaning equipment on a daily basis.
- Maintain collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working group's achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.
- Adapt to changes in work schedule in a positive manner.
- May assist physicians in application of casts, assembling materials (making splints, selecting webril and stockineete, cutting felt, etc.), holding limb removing casts with cast saw, and trimming casts with cast knife. May assist in the application of CPMs, cooling machines, braces, and other devices.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Two years of operating room experience.
Preferrable Qualifications
- An associate degree in a Surgical Technologist program.
- Three years of same-day, orthopedic, endoscopy, LASIK, or other relevant surgical experience.
- Specialty certifications.
Salary Range:$45,000 - $65,000 annually
Working Environment
This position requires frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood, and bodily fluids, extreme noise levels, radiation, lasers, drastic fluctuations in ambient temperature, and the ability to wear a protective lead apron for extended periods of time. The individual must be able to stand under hot surgical lights for prolonged periods, lift patients and heavy equipment, and be exposed to septic infections.
