Position Overview:
KES, Inc. is in search of skilled Mechanical Engineers who possess the expertise and experience necessary to aid in engineering design and lifecycle support initiatives for naval vessels and combat craft.

In this capacity, the Mechanical Engineer will be part of the Combatant Craft Engineering and Design Services Division, engaging in various functional areas including project management, research and development (R&D), science and technology (S&T) development, planning, acquisition engineering, integrated logistics support (ILS), in-service engineering, testing and evaluation, boat inventory management (BIM), and lifecycle management for maritime craft.


Key Responsibilities:

The Mechanical Engineer will be tasked with the design of watercraft propulsion systems, auxiliary equipment, and systems integration. This includes analyzing and considering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, failure analysis, systems dynamics, and material properties.

Auxiliary equipment encompasses all components necessary for a fully operational watercraft to fulfill mission requirements. Examples of these systems include, but are not limited to, raw water systems, potable water systems, engine exhaust systems, fuel and lubrication oil systems, air conditioning and handling systems, compressed air systems, heating systems, and other fluid systems.

The Mechanical Engineer will conduct analyses, calculations, and validations of designs for mechanical systems, which may include:

  • Deck machinery systems
  • Engine sizing
  • Exhaust sizing
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Flow rate assessments for air and ventilation systems
  • Fluid flow evaluations
  • Heating and cooling systems
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Launch and recovery systems
  • Machinery vibrations
  • Noise predictions
  • Piping system sizing
  • Pressure drop calculations
  • Pump and compressor systems
  • Reduction gear sizing
  • Shaft bearing loading and alignment

Candidate Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will analyze existing ship construction and modification drawings to assess the impact of proposed upgrades. They will coordinate mechanical work across multiple alterations and collaborate with all relevant disciplines and team members.

Additionally, the Mechanical Engineer will lead engineers and technicians during ship inspections, which may involve surveying existing HVAC systems, potable water systems, fuel and lubrication oil piping, launch and recovery systems, propulsion systems, and related equipment.

They will ensure all engineering and technician design work is verified and that interference control plans are effectively implemented onboard the ship. The candidate should possess expertise in ship mechanical construction techniques, terminology, and general characteristics.

Furthermore, the Mechanical Engineer will design and modify existing mechanical control systems, provide clear and concise solutions to client design inquiries, and ensure all mechanical engineering calculations are verified as necessary. They will lead mechanical design projects for the assigned class of ships and ensure that all mechanical drawings comply with government and regulatory approval requirements while integrating with other engineering disciplines.

Collaboration with electrical engineering and design personnel is essential, and the candidate may be required to work at designated government sites as needed.


Qualifications:

Required:
U.S. Citizenship is mandatory. An existing U.S. government-granted personnel security clearance or eligibility at the SECRET level is preferred. A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an accredited institution is required. The candidate must be willing and able to travel domestically and internationally for ship inspections as required.

Preferred:
Possession of an EIT certificate and/or PE license is desirable.


Experience:

Senior Engineer: A minimum of 7 years of mechanical engineering and design experience, including 2D CAD drawing development.
Junior Level: 0-3 years of mechanical engineering and design experience, including 2D CAD drawing development. Proficiency in 2D CAD and Microsoft Excel is essential.


Desired Specialized Experience:

Experience working with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Detachment, Code 83 Combatant Craft Group is highly advantageous.
