The Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration is seeking a highly skilled Optometrist to join our team in providing comprehensive eye care services, including low vision care, to our patients. As an Optometrist with the Veterans Health Administration, you will have the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population and make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Responsibilities- Provide low vision care to patients with visual impairments, including those with legal blindness.
- Collaborate with blind rehabilitation specialists and visual impairment services team coordinators to develop treatment plans for patients.
- Examine, diagnose, treat, and manage ocular conditions, diseases, and injuries.
- Order laboratory and imaging studies as necessary.
- Prescribe ocular prosthetic devices, including spectacles, contact lenses, prisms, artificial eyes, and low vision aids.
- Provide consultative reports to primary care physicians, staff, and specialists.
- Refer patients requiring care outside the scope of optometry practice.
- Supervise, educate, and train interns, residents, and ophthalmic trainees.
- Certify as a reader in the Tele-eye program.
- Certify as a Compensation and Pension (C&P) provider.
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Education: Degree of doctor of optometry resulting from a course of education in optometry.
- Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Physical Standards: Must meet physical requirements as outlined in the 'Physical Requirements' section of this announcement.
- English Language Proficiency: Optometrists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
- Graduate of an accredited VA residency training program in low vision.
- Successful completion of Advanced Competency in Medical Optometry Examination.
In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.
- Full Grade (VP-0662-12): Two years of optometric practice or its equivalent.
- Intermediate Grade (VP-0662-13): Four years of optometric practice or its equivalent.
- Senior Grade (VP-0662-14): Meets the requirements for Intermediate grade and the requirements in paragraphs (1) and (2) below.
