Job Title: Special Education Instructional Assistant

Join our team as a Special Education Instructional Assistant at Frederick County Public Schools. As a key member of our educational support staff, you will play a vital role in helping students with special needs achieve their academic and personal goals.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to support our special education program. The successful candidate will work under the general direction of certified classroom teachers and/or school administrators to provide assistance to students with special needs. This may include physical and/or personal care support, as well as helping students with daily living skills and academic tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support students with special needs in a classroom setting, under the direction of certified teachers and/or administrators.
  • Communicate and document student progress, including academic and behavioral goals.
  • Set up and adapt materials, equipment, and assistive devices for use by students, as directed.
  • Facilitate student progress toward independence, including daily living skills and academic tasks.
  • Monitor and assist students during educational and recreational activities, including physical education and extracurricular activities.
  • Assist students with routine physical and/or personal care, as needed.
  • Monitor and assist students in meeting Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives.
  • Carry out emergency action and/or health care plans for designated students, as needed.
  • Assist students with classroom accessibility, including setting up and adapting materials and equipment.
  • Prioritize work assignments and complete tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrate support for the organization and its goals, including accepting constructive criticism and feedback.
  • Report promptly for work and maintain an acceptable attendance pattern.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of English, spelling, vocabulary, and mathematics.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information, including IEPs and other sensitive documents.
  • Participate in professional development trainings and workshops, as scheduled.
  • Assist with administering, scoring, and recording of assessments, as needed.
  • May participate in crisis intervention techniques, as needed.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, including collaborating with teachers, administrators, and other support staff.
  • Provide general clerical support for the special education program, including typing, filing, making phone calls, scheduling, and other similar tasks.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Note: minimum of 48 college credits, AA degree, or passing of the ParaPro Assessment Test will be required for Title One Schools.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely in both oral and written form.
  • Working knowledge of English, spelling, vocabulary, and mathematics.
  • Willingness to participate in training programs or professional development designed by the principal or central office staff, as it pertains to the job function.
  • Capable of performing the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate of Arts Degree
  • College level coursework related to child development
  • Previous experience working with children in an educational setting
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Bilingual-Spanish
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language
  • Knowledge of child development and instructional strategies
  • Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals, and programs
Physical Demands:
  • Frequent bending, lifting, walking may be required.
  • May require moving wheelchairs, operating lifting devices, and assisting students with self-care needs.
  • Assist with physically aggressive behaviors, as needed.
  • Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 lbs.
