Overview of the Department: The Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to providing exceptional anesthetic and critical care services to our patients. We are focused on advancing research, enhancing quality improvement in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, and educating the next generation of anesthesiologists through our residency and fellowship programs, alongside medical student education.
Primary Responsibilities: Deliver comprehensive care to patients as designated by the Department Chair or their representative. This encompasses pre-anesthetic assessments, intraoperative anesthetic management, postoperative evaluations, resuscitation efforts, intensive care, therapeutic and diagnostic nerve blocks, and consultations for chronic pain management. Supervise the activities of nurse anesthetists as assigned.
Key Duties:
- Education: Engage in direct clinical instruction of residents, medical students, and student nurse anesthetists. Contribute to the department's educational programs and participate in required meetings and conferences.
- Research: Engage in clinical or laboratory research and scholarly activities within the department's guidelines. Involvement in clinical trials is encouraged based on individual interests and specialties.
- Service: Participate in various departmental, School of Medicine, university, or health system committees as requested. The department values active citizenship within the institution and promotes community service.
- Clinical Practice: Provide anesthesiology care to patients as directed, including in main operating rooms and outpatient settings. May oversee Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) as appropriate and manage anesthesia care in critical care environments.
Qualifications Required:
- MD or DO degree
- ABA board eligible/certified in anesthesiology and/or certified/eligible for Critical Care Certification
- Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
- Eligible for employment in the United States
- Strong communication, clinical, and teaching abilities
- Proven experience in fostering a diverse environment or a commitment to doing so as a faculty member
