We are seeking a Manager of Protection and Control Systems to oversee our Electric Utility Design team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and guide a dedicated team of engineers, designers, and drafters in creating comprehensive protection and control design packages.
  • Oversee the development of protection and control drawing packages, which may encompass:
    • Panel Diagrams
    • Schematic and Wiring Diagrams
    • Protection Three-Line Drawings
    • Phasing Diagrams
    • Bill of Materials (BOM)
    • Settings Files (including SEL .rdb type files)
  • Deliver relay protection and control engineering for medium to high voltage projects ranging from 2.4kV to 345kV.
  • Conduct necessary analyses and calculations to successfully produce protection and control design packages.
  • Apply relay protection principles and practices for microprocessor relay applications.
  • Act as Engineer of Record (EOR) in your area of expertise, ensuring design drawings are sealed as required.
  • Establish design criteria, material specifications, and protection philosophies that align with client standards and requirements.
  • Review vendor submissions and provide insightful analysis and feedback.
  • Collaborate effectively with other disciplines within the company, including structural, civil, and survey teams, to communicate design requirements.
  • Prepare proposals, scopes, conceptual studies, cost estimates, relay settings, and schedules to facilitate project awarding and execution.
  • Foster and maintain excellent client relationships as a primary point of contact.
  • Participate in client meetings to ensure design objectives are met.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • PE license in Kansas preferred, or the ability to obtain it promptly.
  • 7-10 years of experience in substation design or a related field.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and industry standards, including the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electric Code (NEC), and relevant IEEE standards.
  • Understanding of NERC/FERC Reliability Standards.
  • Experienced in developing and selecting protection schemes and settings for Generation, Transmission, Substation, and Distribution.
  • Knowledgeable about various protective relays, test switches, lock-out relays, RTUs, and interfacing field equipment, including relays from manufacturers like SEL, ABB, and GE.
  • Proficient in software tools such as AutoCAD, Mathcad, and other design applications.
  • Working knowledge of design tools including Aspen One-Liner, ETAP, SKM Power Tools, Milsoft WindMil/LightTable, WinIGS, and GroundMat is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Highly organized, self-driven, and capable of managing multiple project tasks. Strong presentation, written communication, time management, and organizational skills are essential.
  • Able to work under tight deadlines, demonstrate sound business judgment, and handle confidential information appropriately.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for site visits and client meetings.
