Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Certified Surgical Technologist to join our team at Blue Mountain Hospital District. As a key member of our surgical team, you will be responsible for ensuring the operating room is adequately prepared for surgical procedures, assisting the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures, and maintaining a safe and sterile environment for patients and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures, including setting up equipment and instruments.
  • Assist the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures, including passing instruments and supplies.
  • Maintain a safe and sterile environment for patients and staff, including cleaning and sterilizing instruments and equipment.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and surgical instruments to ensure they are readily available for use.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives with the department and attend all department staff meetings for the latest updates and information.
  • Identify and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Provide patient with explanations and verbal reassurance, as necessary.
  • Closely observe patient with minimal disturbance.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patient, co-workers, and self, per hospital policies and procedures.
  • Adapt procedures to meet individual needs of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients for treatment.
  • Prepare room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrate competence in care of specimens and accurately handle specimens at all times.
  • Assist in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Notify appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain.
  • Accurately complete operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follow proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; report all discrepancies to Circulating RN and surgeon and/or correct.
  • Carry out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
  • Check all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
  • Follow aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Be fully responsible for care of instruments/equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments.
  • Follow written procedures for steam sterilization; know responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Maintain an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency; follow department standard set up.
  • Support and maintain a culture of safety and quality.
  • Perform services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulating RN.
  • Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the procedure.
  • Anticipate needs of surgeon during intraoperative phase.
  • Hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Clean and prepare rooms between procedures and after last case; restock supplies, when necessary, and organize effectively for end-of-case clean up.
  • Complete documentation within shift and meet current standards, policies, and procedures.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduate of Surgical Technology Program
  • Active/Unencumbered Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of working experience in the Operating Room
