Position Overview

The Vermont State Trail Operations Supervisor is responsible for leading a team of 2-6 individuals on various recreational and trail development projects across state-managed lands. This role emphasizes the safety and oversight of the crew while ensuring the successful execution of all assigned tasks. Under the guidance of the seasonal Trail Coordinators and district recreation personnel, the Supervisor will coordinate all logistical aspects necessary for project completion, including tool organization, material procurement, and crew accommodations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparation and Planning: Familiarize oneself with the scope of work for up to 26 field projects during the season.
  • Resource Management: Organize tools, materials, and accommodations essential for project execution.
  • Team Leadership: Assist in training crew members and ensure adherence to safety protocols, including environmental and equipment safety assessments.
  • Equipment Operation: Oversee and operate heavy machinery such as mini-excavators and motorized wheelbarrows.
  • Construction Tasks: Perform light carpentry and advanced trail construction techniques, including rockwork and hazard tree removal.
  • Public Representation: Act as a representative of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation when engaging with the public.
  • Vehicle Management: Maintain and manage rental vehicle usage and associated documentation.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Record trail conditions and report findings to the appropriate personnel. Maintain accurate work logs and submit end-of-season reports.


Who May Apply

This position is open to all qualified candidates. It is a temporary role, typically involving variable hours, and does not guarantee full-time work.

Work Environment

Responsibilities are primarily conducted outdoors in various weather conditions. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to:
  • Lift and carry heavy items, sometimes exceeding 50 lbs.
  • Navigate challenging terrain under diverse weather conditions.
  • Exhibit manual dexterity for equipment operation and tool usage.
  • Camp in both developed and undeveloped settings.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma and a minimum of two years of relevant experience in trail management, development, or maintenance. Additional coursework in related fields may substitute for experience on a semester-for-six-month basis.

Special Requirements

A valid driver's license is necessary for travel to various work sites.
