We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. The DeKalb County Public Defender's Office is looking for two (2) licensed attorneys in Illinois to join our team as Assistant Public Defenders.


Position Overview
The first role involves representing clients in felony criminal and traffic cases. Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and have at least three years of relevant felony experience. Compensation will be based on experience.

The second role focuses on representing clients in juvenile abuse/neglect and delinquency matters. Candidates must hold a JD; however, law students with a 711 license who are preparing for the bar exam are encouraged to apply. The starting salary for this position is $65,000 annually.

Role Responsibilities
As a Public Defender, you will play a crucial role in providing legal representation to clients who cannot afford an attorney. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing legal representation in both criminal and civil cases, ensuring clients' rights are upheld and they receive a fair trial.
  • Conducting comprehensive legal research to gather evidence and formulate a robust defense.
  • Negotiating with prosecutors and other stakeholders to achieve optimal outcomes for clients.
  • Drafting legal documents, including motions and pleadings, and submitting them to the appropriate courts.
  • Conducting client interviews to collect information and establish a trusting relationship.
  • Collaborating closely with clients to understand their needs and develop case strategies.
  • Staying informed about changes in legal procedures, laws, and regulations to provide the best representation.
  • Managing a substantial caseload and prioritizing effectively to ensure timely representation for all clients.

Required Skills
Ideal candidates will possess:
  • In-depth knowledge of criminal and civil law, including areas such as workers' compensation and securities law.
  • Proficiency in legal drafting and research, including familiarity with Westlaw.
  • Experience with tribal law regulations and environmental law.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication abilities.
  • Capability to thrive in a high-pressure environment while managing a heavy caseload.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to engage with clients who may present challenges.
  • Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • A strong commitment to justice and the protection of clients' rights.

Job Type: Full-time

Compensation: $65,000 - $80,000 annually

Work Schedule:
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as required

License/Certification:
  • Bar License (Required)
