Job Title: Road Superintendent

Join Kings County as a Road Superintendent and take on a challenging role that requires strategic planning, leadership, and technical expertise. As a key member of the Public Works Department, you will oversee the maintenance and improvement of County roads, bridges, and drainage systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan, organize, and oversee the daily operations of the Roads and Bridges division.
  • Manage a team of staff, including supervising and training personnel, and making recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Develop and administer budgets, ensuring compliance with budgeted funding and applying for grants related to division activities.
  • Conduct field inspections of construction projects and investigate complaints concerning road site conditions.
  • Coordinate with the department's Fleet Division staff on the repair or replacement of road construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Monitor encroachments into designated floodways and maintain records of control measures.
  • Prepare and present staff and agenda reports, and other necessary correspondence related to assigned activities and services.
Requirements:
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience administering and overseeing programs, projects, and services in the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads, bridges, and drainage systems.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within the first twelve (12) months of employment, a valid California Class A Commercial driver's license, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within the first twelve (12) months of employment, a valid Forklift Operator's certificate, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment, a Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) with a category C endorsement issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Ability to qualify for security clearance through a background investigation and fingerprint check.
  • Incumbents are required to submit to pre-employment, on-going random and other DOT-mandated drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout the County.

Kings County offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including fully paid PPO health insurance, dental, vision and chiropractic health insurance premiums for employee and eligible dependents, CalPERS retirement, and 64 hours of additional management vacation per fiscal year.
