PRIMARY FUNCTION

This role is accountable for providing leadership and direction in establishing a productive, high-performing, and safety-oriented work environment. The primary focus of this position is to oversee all aspects related to safety, environmental standards, production efficiency, cost management, quality assurance, and personnel development through the continuous application of GBS principles within the designated area of responsibility.

DIMENSIONS

This position is responsible for the training, guidance, and performance evaluation of a team of 2 or more individuals within the assigned area. The typical team size averages around 20 employees.

NATURE AND SCOPE

The main responsibility of this role is to ensure that routine management practices are adhered to and to identify opportunities for process, product, and production improvements within the area of responsibility. The Mechanical Operations Leader is tasked with ensuring the standardization of processes within their designated area. Responsibilities include conducting needs assessments, performing audits, coaching on production and quality improvement programs, providing training, implementing 5S improvements, and developing and executing cost and environmental control objectives. Additionally, this role involves the development and implementation of both new and existing preventive maintenance and safety management processes and procedures.

Qualifications for this position include a two-year college degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or Material Science, along with 4 to 6 years of experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting, particularly with exposure to standardization and production quality methodologies. The candidate must possess a working knowledge of steel manufacturing processes and techniques involving heavy mill machinery and related equipment. Previous experience in scrap processing, melting, casting, rolling, maintenance, finishing, shipping/warehouse operations, and supervisory roles is essential. The successful candidate will demonstrate a foundational understanding of business systems and the application of complex technical and engineering processes. Strong training and guidance abilities are required, along with solid presentation skills and effective interpersonal and organizational capabilities. People management skills are critical.

This position reports directly to the department superintendent and will coordinate efforts with various functional groups both within the area of responsibility and across other departments. The incumbent will be assigned specific responsibilities related to safety, cost management, training, quality assurance, etc., or a particular cell. Attention to detail is essential, and the individual must be comfortable interacting with associates at all organizational levels.

The Mechanical Operations Leader will oversee the administration of standardization processes related to control standards, management standards, routine procedures, job aids, one-point lessons, and process guarantee tables. This role is responsible for ensuring that standardization processes are properly documented and that training is provided to personnel responsible for adhering to these standards. The incumbent will audit performance, document findings, and develop corrective action plans. Responsibilities will include conducting compliance audits and developing and implementing new and existing standards.

The incumbent will lead Failure Analysis when significant issues arise and compare performance against established standards. This role is responsible for updating standards as necessary and conducting performance audits to ensure compliance. The individual must possess strong communication skills, the ability to articulate ideas, provide feedback, and resolve conflicts. A results-oriented mindset and the ability to motivate others are essential.

The incumbent must carry out the aforementioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations. Employees are required to report any situations that may adversely affect human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Manage workflow within the area of responsibility, assist in minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity, monitor performance, manage routine processes, and train employees in standard management practices.
  2. Facilitate training sessions for operators based on a maintained training matrix on compliance standards, routine methodologies, tools, policies, practices, and processes.
  3. Coach and develop the team in failure analysis and support the QIS methodology.
  4. Establish performance expectations, audit performance, document findings, and create corrective action plans.
  5. Collaborate with and motivate operators on topics related to GBS processes, audits, 5S initiatives, needs assessments, preventive maintenance, and safety management processes, QIS, Kaizen Events, and other routine management activities to identify improvement opportunities and resolve issues.
  6. Conduct trend analysis, compile, and analyze symptoms and failures.
  7. Oversee all safety activities and coordinate emergency preparedness practices, policies, and procedures.
  8. Track performance on control items to ensure compliance. Design and implement new standards as well as update existing ones.
  9. Audit performance, document findings, and develop corrective action plans.
  10. Support daily routine management activities, including GBS Processes/Tools in day-to-day operations.
  11. Establish and negotiate cell goals and manage Action Plans for achieving cell goal objectives.
