Department Overview:

The ADVANCE department is responsible for the strategic coordination and management of the ADVANCE program. This includes comprehensive planning across institutions, policy negotiation, budget oversight, program marketing, and the recruitment and retention of students.

Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for ADVANCE, the Senior Academic Support Coach plays a crucial role in delivering student services and success initiatives within the ADVANCE program. This position requires a deep understanding of the collaboration between George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), ensuring that students maximize their opportunities within the program. The Senior Academic Support Coach is dedicated to guiding students throughout their academic journey at NOVA, providing both academic advising and holistic support tailored to their individual needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Primarily focuses on delivering comprehensive student support for the ADVANCE program;
  • Offers holistic assistance to a designated group of students throughout their time at NOVA, utilizing a structured methodology across eight developmental focus areas;
  • Facilitates academic advising for ADVANCE students, leveraging available resources and academic pathways;
  • Guides students in career exploration and aligning their academic pursuits with career objectives, while identifying and addressing barriers to success;
  • Educates students on navigating the ADVANCE program and maximizing available opportunities;
  • Monitors student performance, identifies challenges, and implements intervention strategies to enhance retention;
  • Engages with students to provide success strategies and manages outreach initiatives to foster academic and personal development;
  • Collaborates with academic advisors and other stakeholders to bolster student success;
  • Ensures timely and accurate referrals for additional support services;
  • Participates in outreach initiatives related to the ADVANCE program;
  • Engages in foundational coaching training and ongoing professional development;
  • Utilizes the university's platform for tracking student interactions and referrals;
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience working with transfer and adult degree students;
  • Demonstrated expertise in areas such as academic advising, success coaching, or student services;
  • Experience supporting diverse student populations;
  • Proven track record in Student Affairs or Higher Education Administration;
  • Familiarity with cognitive and career development theories;
  • Proficient in using CRM software and student information systems;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a focus on student service;
  • Able to analyze and resolve issues effectively;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team;
  • Commitment to understanding and addressing the academic needs of diverse student groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field;
  • Experience with educational database management systems;
  • Prior involvement in academic advising or student coaching programs;
  • Demonstrated leadership and program development skills;
  • Knowledge of academic advising and student support services in higher education.
