The Feline Care Unit focuses on providing specialized care for numerous underage kittens and their mothers in a nurturing environment, as well as through an expanding foster initiative. A solid understanding of shelter medicine principles is essential, along with exceptional organizational skills to navigate a rapidly changing environment. The ideal candidate will also possess strong communication abilities, fostering collaboration among team members and guiding them in delivering high-quality medical care.

- Maintain open communication with veterinary colleagues across various programs to coordinate patient care effectively.
- Ensure that all incoming and foster animals receive necessary medical examinations and ongoing care as needed.
- Document medical findings and treatment plans accurately in patient records, ensuring timely scheduling and delivery of care.
- Oversee all aspects of veterinary care, including pre and postoperative management, emergency care, and treatment protocols.
- Participate in daily rounds to assess individual patients and implement treatment recommendations promptly.
- Manage herd health through appropriate use of quarantine and isolation protocols.
- Guide humane decisions regarding euthanasia, considering the physical and behavioral needs of the animals.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Support other departments as needed during off-peak seasons.
- Engage in continuing education to maintain licensure and enhance professional skills.
Educate and Mentor Staff (40%):
- Foster a culture of learning and improvement within the unit, ensuring a respectful and inclusive environment.
- Model best practices in shelter medicine and low-stress handling techniques.
- Stay updated on current shelter medicine protocols and contribute to the training of animal care staff.
- Provide guidance and support to the medical team, ensuring timely communication regarding animal health conditions.
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions to promote team development.
Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution.
- Eligibility for licensure in the relevant state as a veterinarian.
- Strong clinical skills with experience in diagnosing and treating a variety of medical conditions in cats.
- Ability to work effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Compensation and Benefits:
The compensation for this role will be determined based on various factors, including education, experience, and market conditions. In addition to a competitive salary, the position may offer a signing bonus and a comprehensive benefits package.
About the Organization:
The organization is dedicated to improving the lives of animals through advocacy, education, and direct care. With a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the organization values the contributions of all staff members in its mission to prevent cruelty and promote the welfare of animals.
