Job SummaryUnder the supervision of a Corrections Sergeant, you will perform specialized duties involving the control and management of detainees in the City Jail. Your responsibilities will include supervising detainee work crews, ensuring safety and proper treatment of detainees, and maintaining accurate records.
Key Responsibilities- Receives detainees, conducts body searches, and maintains physical control of detainees using minimum force required.
- Obtains required information from detainees, inventories and stores valuables, and issues uniforms and other items per directive.
- Supervises and guards detainee work crews, escorts, transports, and guards prisoners in non-secure areas.
- Coordinates and supervises City Jail detainees assigned to custodial and exterior building maintenance duties.
- Assists other Corrections Officers and department employees, performs court security duties, and operates electronically-controlled access doors.
- Monitors activities of detainees within the jail facility, communicates with detainees, and performs and/or supervises preparation and delivery of meals, laundry, and housekeeping.
- Maintains appropriate records of booking, detention, and release of detainees, operates computerized records management systems, and enters and maintains computerized data.
- Must be 20 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
- Must have a good command of the English language, both written and verbal, and be a high school graduate or equivalent.
- Must be in good physical condition, good moral character, and capable of performing the full range of required duties.
- Must meet State and Federal laws to possess and carry a firearm and meet department standards for firearm qualification.
- Must pass a written examination, oral board, physical agility examination, pre-selection interview, polygraph examination, psychological examination, medical examination, drug screening, and comprehensive background investigation.

The pay range listed for this position is established through the City of Yakima's Master Pay Ordinance in accordance with the Municipal Code and/or the applicable collective bargaining agreement. New employees generally start at step A with progression through the steps based on merit and successful performance evaluation.
