The main objective of the Nutritional Services Cook role is to prepare meals for the residents within the facility.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative Functions

Review meal plans prior to food preparation.

Inspect specialized diet trays to ensure that the correct meals are served to residents.

Complete necessary documentation as requested by the Dietary Manager or Dietitian.

Coordinate food preparation with other departments as needed.

Collaborate with the facility's dietitian to implement recommended dietary changes.

Ensure compliance with all dietary procedures according to facility policies.

Maintain and file menus according to established protocols.

Assist in organizing food service production lines to ensure timely meal preparation.

Process dietary changes and new diet orders received from Nursing Services.

Dietary Service Functions

Prepare meals according to established menus.

Ensure meals are appealing in taste and presentation.

Serve food in accordance with portion control guidelines.

Prepare meals for therapeutic diets as per planned menus.

Utilize standardized recipes and special diet orders for food preparation.

Prepare and serve nutritional supplements and snacks.

Ensure appropriate equipment and utensils are included with residents' meal trays.

Review care plans to confirm that dietary information aligns with food served.

Provide substitute foods for residents who refuse the offered meals.

Make only authorized food substitutions.

Assist in meal service when necessary.

Support food preparation for special events and gatherings.

Personnel Functions

Foster a positive working relationship with food service personnel and other department staff to meet residents' needs.

Create a warm and inviting atmosphere within the department.

Safety and Sanitation Functions

Prepare food in accordance with sanitary regulations and facility policies.

Ensure adherence to safety regulations by all personnel at all times.

Follow established infection control procedures during daily tasks.

Report any occupational exposures to the Dietary Manager.

Assist with daily or scheduled cleaning duties.

Maintain a clean and safe department by ensuring equipment and supplies are in good condition.

Report hazardous conditions or equipment to the Dietary Manager immediately.

Document all accidents or incidents as per facility policy.

Keep food storage areas clean and organized at all times.

Dispose of food and waste according to facility policies.

Wear protective clothing when handling infectious waste.

Report any missing or unreadable labels to the Dietary Manager.

Equipment and Supply Functions

Ensure that food and supplies for upcoming meals are readily available.

Assist in inventorying and storing incoming food and supplies as necessary.

Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Dietary Manager.

Resident Rights Responsibilities

Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information.

Knock before entering a resident's room.

Report any food or dietary complaints to the Dietary Manager.

Working Conditions

Work in food preparation areas and throughout dietary service areas.

May experience temporary exposure to cold temperatures in storage areas.

May be exposed to varying temperatures in kitchen environments.

Move intermittently during work hours and may face frequent interruptions.

Engage with residents, personnel, visitors, and government agencies under various conditions.

Communicate with medical staff and nursing personnel regularly.

May work beyond normal hours and on weekends or holidays as needed.

Participate in continuing education programs.

May be exposed to infectious waste and hazardous materials.

Staff Development Functions

Participate in departmental projects as assigned.

Attend in-service programs and training sessions as directed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education

Minimum of a tenth (10th) grade education required; High School diploma or GED preferred.

Experience

One (1) year of experience as a cook or in food preparation is required; experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Specific Requirements

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

Professional demeanor in both appearance and attitude.

Capability to prepare a variety of foods in large quantities.

Knowledge of dietary procedures is essential.

Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions as needed.

Genuine care for and understanding of the elderly and disabled population.

Ability to interact tactfully with residents, families, and the public.
