Job Description

The Black Futures Lab and Black to the Future Action Fund are non-profit organizations that aim to transform Black communities into constituencies with independent, progressive, and Black political power. Our goal is to enact policies that improve the lives of Black people and ensure they have dignity, safety, and power.

We are seeking a Canvasser to join our team as a social justice advocate. The Canvasser will be part of a team that informs and mobilizes thousands of voters through door-to-door contact and/or phone/text banking. The primary objective is to engage Black voters around economic issues and energize them to vote for officials who will help Black people thrive economically.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Report to the Lead Organizer or Lead Canvasser
  • Talk to hundreds of people daily through door-to-door canvassing, phone, and text banking
  • Enter data collected from potential voters into miniVan
  • Complete accurate daily reports
  • Be willing and dedicated to learning about current political issues
Requirements:
  • Attend a mandatory orientation and training
  • Have a cell phone compatible with miniVan
  • Be relational and able to engage with Black voters from diverse backgrounds
  • Follow a script and provide accurate information to residents
  • Agree to meet the required number of contacts (canvassing)
  • Arrive at the canvassing location on the correct date and time and canvass during the designated times
  • Be able to use a cellphone, web browser, and miniVan to accurately record responses
  • Be reliable and responsible in fulfilling roles and responsibilities as a canvasser
  • Have strong verbal communication skills and interpersonal communication skills, maintaining a positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing needs of the canvass
Physical Demands:
  • Canvassers must be prepared to work in all types of weather
  • Complete light physical activities such as standing or walking for long periods of time
  • Be able to carry up to 10 pounds
  • Read a map
  • Ability to walk for at least 4 hours daily to canvass door-to-door
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation for a gas stipend
  • Previous experience working on a campaign with a community organization, doing sales, or customer service
  • Bilingual English-Spanish or Haitian Creole
