Position Overview:

We are seeking a seasonal leader to oversee our aquatic shifts. The ideal candidate will possess lifeguarding experience, a keen eye for safety, and a strong understanding of quality instructional programming. This role entails fostering a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment that prioritizes member safety and engagement, adhering to YMCA policies and procedures. Our leaders are expected to ensure safe swimming conditions in the pool and surrounding areas while providing direct guidance, instruction, and motivation to participants in a culturally aware manner during swimming classes and programs. The position may also involve leading aquatic activities and private lessons, delivering exceptional service to members in a secure and enjoyable atmosphere. Additionally, this role includes directing the program and staff, assisting in staff scheduling, and offering administrative support as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate the onboarding process for new staff members
  • Develop staff schedules and provide administrative support for the department
  • Maintain vigilant supervision of the pool area
  • Understand and implement all emergency protocols, responding to situations promptly as per YMCA guidelines, and completing necessary reports
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with our diverse members, participants, and colleagues
  • Consistently apply safety regulations, policies, and guidelines for the aquatic area
  • Keep accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and/or state health regulations
  • Conduct equipment inspections and ensure availability of necessary supplies
  • Assess the pool for potential hazards upon arrival
  • Perform chemical testing at designated times and take appropriate actions
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

Qualifications:
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Demonstrated lifeguard and swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • At least one year of experience teaching swim lessons
  • Current certifications in First Aid, CPRPRO (BLS), AED, and O2
  • Valid YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent certification
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent
  • Ability to pass the lifeguard water test
  • Capacity to remain alert
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Adequate hearing to distinguish distress signals
  • Capability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for water rescues
  • Proficient verbal communication skills, including the ability to project voice in various situations
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper swimming techniques
  • Capacity to lift equipment and assist small to average-sized children (up to 50 pounds)
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
  • Basic computer skills
  • Fluency in a second language is preferred
