Key Responsibilities

The Lead Instrument Technician, certified, is tasked with the meticulous care, sanitation, management, and reprocessing of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This position involves the decontamination of instruments and equipment in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards. The technician is responsible for assembling and packaging trays for sterilization, adhering to established protocols, and operating sterilization machinery.

Utilizing expertise in instrumentation, along with blood and body fluid safety protocols, disinfection methods, and sterilization techniques, the technician conducts quality assurance monitoring and documentation in compliance with policy and procedures.

This role also encompasses the coordination and assembly of surgical case carts. The technician accurately compiles inventory lists for trays and surgeon preference cards, ensuring all items are signed and dated. Regular reviews of instrument and inventory supplies are conducted, with proactive identification of needs for specific cases, alongside assistance with operating room sterilization processes. A thorough understanding of supplies, instrumentation, disinfection methods, and sterilization processes is essential. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Furthermore, the Lead Instrument Technician serves as the primary contact during each shift, prioritizing tasks and overseeing the assembly of surgical case carts. This position involves performing complex tasks and training new personnel, acting as an educator to fellow technicians. The technician is responsible for completing advanced-level trays and contributing to process improvements within the department. Scheduling shift coverage may also be part of the responsibilities.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in Sterile Processing is required.
  • Proficient knowledge of surgical terminology, instrumentation, and supplies is essential. Basic computer skills are necessary, along with experience in sterile processing and case cart management.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Required Certifications

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT).
