Job Summary

The House Supervisor is a key leadership role within Oroville Hospital, responsible for overseeing the Medical-Surgical units, Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit, Obstetrics department, and Staffing Office. This role requires a strong nursing background, excellent communication skills, and the ability to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision to nursing staff in Medical-Surgical units, Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit, Obstetrics department, and Staffing Office.
  • Indirectly supervise all other hospital departments.
  • Ensure appropriate unit assignment based on patient acuity, age-specific requirements, and diagnosis.
  • Communicate with Nurse Managers, Nursing Services, and hospital administrators regarding problems, interventions, or decisions made by the Supervisor.
  • Investigate incidents, discuss with staff as appropriate, and report all information to the Director of Medical-Surgical Services.
  • Assess emergency situations and respond promptly and effectively, notifying the appropriate authorities and administration as indicated.
  • Implement disaster plans as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of bed availability and make decisions to divert patients when the hospital is full.
  • Implement established departmental staffing plans for Medical-Surgical Services, assist other areas as directed by the Chief Nursing Officer, and adjust staffing levels according to patient acuity, census, and special needs.
  • Review staff availability for current and next shifts, anticipate needs, and revise staffing as changes occur.
  • Accept and log phone calls regarding illness and personal emergencies, replace staff as needed, and notify department directors of any trends or patterns being established.
  • Log messages regarding availability of staff or necessary changes in schedules.
  • Understand staffing policies regarding scheduling and time-off requests and abide by them.
  • Call staff off for low census in a timely manner and do so according to policy.
  • Supervise the staffing clerk in performing bed control and, in their absence, perform those responsibilities.
  • Ensure patient bed assignments are appropriate based on patient needs, staff skills, infection control policies, and physician preferences.
  • Communicate with charge nurses for appropriate placement of patients.
  • Consider qualifications and availability of staff in determining bed assignments.
  • Accurately complete admission/non-scheduled procedure forms and distribute copies appropriately.
  • Consider alternative bed assignments (e.g., ICU, OB) when Medical-Surgical units are full.
  • Notify the hospital administrator of potential need to divert patients when the hospital is full.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Confer with charge nurses in all areas.
  • Makes rounds on Medical-Surgical patients.
  • Responsible for collecting data.
  • Provides input during analysis of data.
  • Helps to formulate and implement a plan of action for quality improvement.
  • Assists with evaluation of actions taken.
  • Has completed RN skills checklist for Medical-Surgical units.
  • Functions as an immediately available clinical resource person for staff.
  • Maintains high visibility to staff on Medical-Surgical units.
  • Determines appropriate unit for admission based on level of care needed (e.g., Med-Surg, ICU).
  • Determines need for transfer to ICU from Medical-Surgical Unit.
  • Reviews all Code 99s, documents findings, and forwards to ICU Director.
  • Completes Risk Identification report for First Aid Team calls.
  • Calls Surgery crew in for non-scheduled surgeries, providing crew with necessary information to set up for the case.
  • Calls in on-call endoscopy crew.
  • When departments are closed, notifies Surgery and Endoscopy of add-ons to the schedule.
  • Follows procedure for obtaining supplies from Central, Central Sterile, and Storeroom.
  • Follows procedure for inter-facility equipment acquisition/borrowing and lending.
  • Follows procedure for obtaining medications from pharmacy.
Financial Accountability
  • Demonstrates cost-effectiveness when staffing.
  • Considers budget in all decisions.
  • Uses overtime to cover staff only when all other alternatives have been tried.
  • Uses least expensive overtime.
  • Understands outpatient programs and assists in admitting patients into the appropriate category.
  • Assists in controlling length of stay by ensuring that patient tests are performed in a timely manner.
  • Seeks methods for decreasing costs and shares these ideas with staff and management.
  • Participates in special projects as assigned by the Vice President of Nursing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
