Overview:
The Acute Trauma Medical Surgical unit is a specialized 40-bed facility located on the 5th floor, dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients with both medical monitoring needs and traumatic injuries that have been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Department. This unit excels in the post-operative management of patients undergoing acute and chronic gastrointestinal and urologic procedures. Recognized as "The Center of Excellence" for bariatric surgery care, this unit prides itself on delivering high-quality patient outcomes.
Team Structure:
Within this 40-bed unit, a team of 3-4 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) is scheduled for each shift to support nursing activities. Additionally, a Mobility Technician from the Physical Therapy Department is assigned to assist patients in their mobilization efforts. The unit also benefits from the expertise of a certified wound care nurse who conducts weekly rounds to ensure optimal wound management for every patient.
Role of the Registered Nurse:
A Registered Professional Nurse plays a crucial role in delivering patient care through a systematic approach that includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN is responsible for prescribing, delegating, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating patient education and the activities of ancillary nursing staff while upholding the standards of professional nursing practice. The Registered Nurse is equipped to provide both direct and indirect patient care.
Qualifications:
A. Education and Skills
Must be a graduate of a State Board accredited School of Nursing or an equivalent program.
B. Experience
Preferred: At least one year of experience in an acute hospital setting.
C. Licenses and Certifications
Must hold a current RN license or permit to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas. Certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) is required within two weeks of employment.
