Key Responsibilities:
- Complete a competency checklist under the supervision of an experienced Nurse Examiner.
- Administer direct medical-forensic care to patients from the community following incidents of sexual assault.
- Deliver comprehensive clinical services, including repeated physical evaluations, immunizations, and medication administration as needed.
- Provide immediate, victim-centered crisis intervention and emotional support during medical examinations.
- Connect survivors with trained advocates for confidential support and crisis intervention outside of medical examinations.
- Ensure availability of advocates for survivors throughout the medical examination process.
- Offer emergency contraception and prophylactic antibiotics to survivors at risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.
- Deliver trauma-informed and culturally sensitive clinical care.
- Conduct thorough medical examinations and collect forensic evidence in accordance with best practices.
- Explain the medical examination process, forensic examination options, and treatment alternatives, including prophylactic medications.
- Gather comprehensive medical histories from patients.
- Perform forensic and medical evaluations.
- Discuss aftercare and treatment options with patients.
- Utilize specialized forensic equipment for evidence collection.
- Engage in ongoing training on topics such as injury identification, documentation, evidence preservation, and expert witness testimony.
- Adhere to established policies, procedures, and protocols for the program.
- Participate in program staff meetings and quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist with routine clinic operations, including supply management and scheduling.
- Engage in professional development activities, including peer reviews and mentoring new team members.
- Work towards SANE-A certification, if not already certified, and complete certification within three years of training.
- Support additional operational duties as assigned by the Healthcare Program Coordinator or Medical Director.
- Maintain a collaborative relationship with the medical director and interdisciplinary team members involved in patient care.
- Provide court testimony as required.
- Collect and accurately report program-related data.
- Perform other assigned duties as necessary.
Qualifications:
Applicants should possess knowledge equivalent to that typically acquired through a four-year degree in Nursing, along with one to three years of progressively responsible nursing experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the relevant state is required. A Bachelor's degree in Nursing and/or specific nursing experience may be preferred.
Desired Skills:
Proficiency in English is essential; bilingual candidates are encouraged but not required. A minimum of three years of registered nursing experience in direct patient care is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate strong clinical assessment skills, the ability to work independently, and effective collaboration with other healthcare professionals and victim service providers. Completion of a 40-hour didactic SANE training approved by the International Association of Forensic Nurses is highly desirable.
