As a Clinical Pharmacist in our Community Pharmacy, you will play a vital role in ensuring the appropriate selection, dosing, and dispensing of medication orders. You will provide supervision for pharmacy technicians, residents, graduates, and interns, and interact with patients, physicians, and nurses to provide proper drug therapy. In the absence of the Pharmacy Supervisor/Manager, you will function as Pharmacist in Charge (PIC).
Responsibilities and Requirements- Verify prescription orders and dispense medications accurately, ensuring the accuracy of entered prescription orders, performing DUR/DUE, verifying drug/drug interactions, and completing visual verification of orders.
- Transfer prescriptions to and from other pharmacies, following state and federal law requirements.
- Compound prescription medications when necessary and ensure appropriate documentation is completed.
- Monitor medication therapy and make recommendations to therapy when appropriate.
- Counsel patients, physicians, nurses, and other interested parties on drugs, their pharmacological action, dosage, contraindications, reactions, etc.
- Identify and complete medication therapy management opportunities and recommend, administer, and educate on immunizations as appropriate.
- Stay current with professional literature and maintain competence required for the position.
- Oversee technical personnel who assist in the preparation, maintenance, and dispensing of medications and supplies.
- Assist with academic functions such as serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of medications and supplies, ensuring inventory is rotated, expired stock is appropriately disposed of, and orders are placed in a timely manner.
- Provide support and serve as a resource for nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers on medication information and education.
- Collaborate with leadership to ensure policies and procedures are reviewed and make recommendations for improvement.
- Actively assess the security of medication areas and the compliance of personnel with established policies, procedures, state, and federal laws, including record keeping.
- Maintain established procedures for quality control and disposal of unusable medications and hazardous waste.
- Issue controlled substances and maintain records as required by law, pharmacy policies, and procedures.
- Review controlled substances records for discrepancies/errors and report discrepancies to appropriate authority.
- Operate a cash register, including end-of-day checkout, with minimal shortage/overages.
- Ensure all insurance claims are processed according to policy and procedures.
- Confirm accuracy of prescription billing, days' supply, quantity, MME, source, and DAW to avoid audit chargebacks and ensure compliance with Fraud Waste and Abuse (FWA) Laws.
- Contribute to zero medication errors with injury by completion of Near Miss and Occurrence reports.
- Assist pharmacy supervisor in reviewing medication event reports and identifying and implementing process improvement opportunities.
- Provide excellent customer service, counsel patients on drug information with a high standard of confidentiality, and in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Precept pharmacy students and residents, as applicable.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
A pharmacy degree (Pharm.D; Bachelor of Pharmacy) from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy is required. No experience is required.
Physical RequirementsFrequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements. Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors. Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc. Frequent keyboard use/data entry. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and gripping. Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs. Rare climbing.
Required Professional License and/or CertificationsPharmacist, Registered - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Pharmacist - Missouri Division of Professional Registration. Pharmacist - Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacist - Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.
