The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of individuals and families by providing essential human services. Our mission is to foster a healthy, interconnected community through collaboration with over 100 local agencies and direct service initiatives.
The primary objective of the Family Support Services Coordinator (FSSC) is to connect families entering temporary housing facilities early in their stay, ensuring they receive comprehensive service coordination. This role is vital in helping families stabilize their situations and work towards permanent housing solutions. Key responsibilities include:
Engagement, Assessment, and Planning:
- Establishing a comfortable rapport with families.
- Identifying immediate needs beyond housing and assisting families in addressing them.
- Facilitating continuity of care by helping families maintain connections to prior services.
- Utilizing assessment tools to evaluate family histories and inform future support strategies.
- Administering developmental screenings for young children to promote school readiness.
- Collaborating with families to define desired outcomes as they transition to stable housing.
- Advocating for families and empowering them to self-advocate when appropriate.
- Ensuring timely access to necessary services and supports.
- Assisting families in reconnecting with natural supports and community resources.
- Regularly reviewing progress and satisfaction with families to adjust plans as needed.
- Continuing support until families achieve their goals or choose to discontinue services.
- Documenting interactions and maintaining accurate records in a timely manner.
- Participating in ongoing training and professional development.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not include supervisory duties.
Additional Responsibilities:
Occasionally, the employee may be required to undertake additional tasks as directed by the employer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A commitment to meeting the diverse needs of families.
- In-depth understanding of local, state, and federal human services programs, particularly those related to housing, education, and employment.
- Ability to build trust and rapport with individuals from varied backgrounds.
- Strong relationship-building skills with community organizations and stakeholders.
- Proficiency in using technology for documentation and reporting.
- Effective time management and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining confidentiality.
- Willingness to learn and apply principles of Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed Care, and Housing First.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Flexibility to adjust work hours to accommodate family schedules.
- Adaptability to a dynamic work environment.
Education and Experience Requirements:
A Master's degree in a human services field with three years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree with five years of experience in direct practice within the human services sector.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Clearances as required by law and a valid driver's license with reliable transportation are mandatory.
