Position Title: Judge of the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribal Court

Employment Type: Part-Time Contract Services

Appointment Duration: Four years from the date of appointment by the Tribal Council

Compensation: Dependent on Experience

Overview of Responsibilities:
The Judge for the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribal Court is tasked with ensuring the equitable and unbiased administration of justice for all matters within the jurisdiction of the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe. The Tribal Judge will oversee all legal cases and disputes arising under the Constitution of the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe and may delegate cases to lower courts or alternative dispute resolution methods as designated by the Tribal Council in accordance with the Constitution.

Additional responsibilities include managing the administrative functions of the Tribal Court and advising the Tribe on securing funding to support court operations. The role may also involve the formulation of court procedural rules, Tribal Ordinances, and codes for the Tribal Council's approval.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law institution.
  • Membership in good standing with the bar of any state.
  • A minimum of three years of experience with Tribal law concepts and the principles of Tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction.
  • No felony convictions or crimes involving dishonesty, nor disbarment in any jurisdiction.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.
  • Willingness to travel and conduct hearings as necessary.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.
  • A genuine commitment to assist the Tribe in developing its court system and administering justice fairly.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience serving as a Tribal judge with both civil and criminal jurisdiction.
  • Proficiency in developing and managing court policies and procedures, whether in a Tribal court or other legal settings.
  • Extensive knowledge of statutory construction rules, applicable within Tribal jurisdictions or otherwise.

Applicants will be required to participate in an interview with the Tribal Council and General Counsel to assess their qualifications, suitability for the role, and to negotiate the terms and scope of work for the appointment.
