Job Summary

The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing high-quality respiratory care to patients through assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. This role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively interact with patients, families, physicians, and other staff members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation.
  • Perform all respiratory care procedures, including oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services, and patient and staff education.
  • Monitor patient response to therapies and make recommendations to change or modify based on assessment.
  • Assess patient physical status by inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, patient behavior, and reviewing existing data in patient records.
  • Perform treatments according to physician orders, explain therapy and therapeutic goals to patients, and modify treatment procedures based on patient response.
  • Determine appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommend methods to physicians to achieve therapeutic goals.
  • Set up and maintain different modes of oxygen therapy to maintain adequate PaO2 levels with accurate inspired levels of oxygen.
  • Administer intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) or aerosol therapy by preparing prescribed medication, adjusting machines or devices to accomplish patient individual clinical needs, documenting and observing patient vital signs, productivity of cough, relief of dyspnea, improved breath sounds, and any adverse reactions to therapy.
  • Give postural drainage, vibration, percussion to ensure proper drainage of bronchial secretions by using manual or mechanical percussion, checking orders and X-rays for segments to be treated prior to initiating treatment, auscultation prior to and after procedure to note presence of clearance of secretions and response to therapy.
  • Instruct patients and families in incentive spirometer, metered dose inhaler (MDI) administration, postural drainage and clapping, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, and home aerosol therapy.
  • May assist doctors with bronchoscopy and tracheostomy, assist with tracheostomy endotracheal tube changes, and ensure proper humidification.
  • Procure sputum for culture and sensitivity or airway clearance either by patient coaching, administration of mucolytics, aerosol therapy, or endotracheal/nasopharyngeal suctioning.
  • Evaluate normal and pathologic blood and urine laboratory value ranges.
  • Perform arterial punctures and analysis, have an in-depth knowledge of analysis and arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation, perform arterial line procedures, take safety precautions, sterile procedure, flushing, and ABG aspirations.
  • May perform EKGs, understand electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
  • Maintain all Respiratory Therapy equipment and supplies.
  • Respond to cardio-pulmonary resuscitations and actively participate as indicated by clinical circumstances.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an AMA-approved school for Respiratory Care (required)
  • Bachelor's Degree, related to Respiratory Therapy/Healthcare/Healthcare Admin/Business Admin (preferred)
  • Current Respiratory Care License in the state they are working (required)
  • National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentialed (required)
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred)
  • BLS Basic Life Support - American Heart Association (required)
  • ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support - American Heart Association or Red Cross (preferred)
  • PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association (preferred)
  • Previous working experience in an ambulatory or acute care setting (preferred)
  • 6 months Respiratory Therapy experience in a general care area (preferred)

Training
  • EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred)
