Position Overview

The Town of Brookline, a vibrant and diverse community, is seeking a qualified candidate for the role of Chief of Parks and Green Spaces.

This position is crucial for overseeing an extensive network of historically significant and beautifully maintained parks and green spaces that enhance the quality of life for our residents.

Key Responsibilities

The Chief will report directly to the Public Works Commissioner and will be tasked with managing, organizing, and directing all functions of the Parks and Green Spaces Division. This includes:

  • Planning, designing, acquiring, constructing, and maintaining parks, playgrounds, cemeteries, and athletic fields.
  • Administering environmental regulations and policies, managing water resources, and leading open space initiatives.
  • Coordinating emergency response operations related to weather events, including snow and storm management.

Leadership and Collaboration

The Chief will play a pivotal role in fostering diversity and inclusion within the team, while coordinating projects with various Public Works Divisions, Town Departments, and external agencies to ensure timely and professional completion of Division objectives.

This role involves overseeing a dedicated team of approximately fifty staff members, managing labor relations, and ensuring effective tracking and reporting of all operational functions.

Resource Management

The Chief will ensure the Division is well-resourced to achieve its mission through strategic budgeting, planning, partnerships, and personnel management. Responsibilities also include:

  • Preparing and updating the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget, with an estimated six-year budget exceeding $25 million.
  • Planning seasonal and long-term work programs, facilitating public review processes, and developing stewardship plans for open spaces.

Policy Development and Communication

The Chief will research, develop, and implement policies and procedures to meet objectives, ensuring the delivery of top-tier services and programs. This includes:

  • Preparing comprehensive reports and making informed recommendations.
  • Presenting projects and addressing community concerns at various meetings, often outside of regular hours.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess a Master's Degree in a relevant field and have at least ten years of experience in managing public lands and forestry. Key attributes include:

  • Exceptional management skills and a commitment to teamwork and staff development.
  • Strong organizational abilities and flexibility to handle diverse tasks.
  • Experience in capital improvement programs and successful project delivery.
  • Knowledge of public parks and open space management principles.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
