Job Summary

BD is seeking an experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) professional to lead the EHS Department for our Milpitas Campus. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and implementing effective environmental, health, and safety programs, ensuring a safe work environment, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and implement EHS programs, including ERT, Safety Champions, Hazard Communication, Occupational Safety, Chemical Hygiene, Industrial Hygiene, Laser Safety, and Biosafety.
  • Provide supervision, coaching, and development for site EHS personnel.
  • Lead projects and evaluate processes to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Develop and provide safety and environmental training to all site and field associates.
  • Conduct job site assessments, focusing on unsafe conditions and behaviors, and ensure appropriate action is taken to correct deficiencies.
  • Participate in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections and procedures following a citation.
  • Investigate, prepare, and forward reports on injuries and fatalities, as required.
  • Develop safety policies, goals, programs, and training.
  • Monitor and maintain records and permits of hazardous materials, biohazardous materials, and waste in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Develop and communicate technical information to foster understanding, decision-making, and positive interaction with employees, functional managers, and facility management teams.
  • Manage EHS financial performance.
  • Periodically review policies, programs, and metrics to ensure alignment of EHS strategies with business needs.
  • Stay up-to-date with US and non-US regulations affecting the area of supervision/management and comply with those regulations, initiating changes to practices and procedures as needed.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated understanding of federal and state safety and environmental laws and the ability to identify and evaluate workplace hazards.
  • Demonstrated ability to use influence skills to develop and implement effective safety programs engaging all employees.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, including the ability to exercise judgment and communicate and manage confidential information.
  • Effective skills in counseling/coaching/influencing, conflict management, and interpersonal/verbal/written communications.
  • Demonstrated understanding of California Workers Compensation Law and Workers Compensation Claims Management.
Education and Experience
  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field and at least 10 years of experience.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred to ensure continuing education of current EH&S trends and knowledge.
  • Experience designing and implementing strategies/programs/processes supporting a business strategy.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, field, and R&D functions.
