Job Title: Tool & Die Engineer

The Press Model Y Production Team at Tesla is seeking a skilled Tool & Die Engineer to join our team at our Gigafactory in Austin, TX. As a key member of our production team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing production dies, process planning, and working closely with Stamping Engineering, Materials, Production teams, and Internal/External Die Vendors to deliver a final product that meets cost, time, and quality targets.

Responsibilities:
  • Review die processes for parts to ensure they meet cost, quality, and repeatability targets.
  • Adhere to simulation guidelines and die design standards.
  • Conduct detailed studies and provide recommendations to the team for solving process and feasibility issues.
  • Assess automation blank loading and transfer arms to ensure press speed and end-of-arm cups do not damage panels.
  • Direct tool changes to tune dies per dimensional quality engineer to ensure dies are capable and repeatable.
  • Ensure dies meet production process intent for cost, quality, and repeatability.
  • Perform vendor die design reviews to ensure die robustness and performance targets are met.
  • Oversight of package of work through to home line activities.
  • Develop inventory for spare details, punches, and buttons using die BOM.
  • Ensure production readiness of dies, scrap shed, SPM, and no burrs/slivers.
Requirements:
  • Good understanding of press/stamping processes and die design.
  • Knowledge of material properties for aluminum and steel.
  • 2+ years of simulation/die design experience preferred in class 'A' parts, aluminum, and steel, die build/tryout.
  • Driven, energetic, and willing to 'get out of the box' with solutions and processes to advance production manufacturing.
  • Ability to work with and lead others within a collaborative team environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Project.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
