This newly established role is part of our expansion within the education sector, which will include a team of five reporters, an editor focused on education, and an audience engagement producer.

Compensation will be based on experience, with a starting salary of $70,000.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report on breaking news and daily stories related to the Houston ISD and four other targeted districts.
  • Assist in reporting, writing, and audience engagement for enterprise stories developed by fellow education reporters.
  • Propose and lead enterprise stories that align with our focus areas.
  • Create educational resources such as guides and explainers relevant to our target districts.
  • Collaborate with the audience engagement producer to enhance content distribution to our intended audience.

We expect this reporter to work closely with our audience team to identify key figures and platforms within our target communities, ensuring effective content reach.

Building trust and establishing strong community ties is essential for engaging historically underserved audiences.

Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Spanish is required, as many families in our target districts primarily communicate in Spanish.
  • Experience in covering education is beneficial, but we value a fresh, audience-focused perspective.
  • Strong writing skills with an emphasis on clarity and brevity.
  • Multimedia skills, including photography and video production, are advantageous.
  • A collaborative approach to working with diverse teams.

Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license, insurance, and access to a vehicle.

This position reports to Team Leader Jacob Carpenter, an experienced education journalist.
