LOCATION: Lancaster, PA

HOURS: Full-time (36 hours weekly). Night shifts (7pm-7am). Rotating weekends and holidays.

SIGN ON BONUS: $15,000 with a 2-year commitment. Eligibility criteria apply, including a minimum of 15 months of RN experience. External candidates only.

ROLE SUMMARY: The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is an entry-level RN or an RN with less than 15 months of experience who demonstrates foundational safe practices within the professional nursing framework. This role seeks mentorship to integrate essential concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes to fulfill the standards of competent nursing practice. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice embodies the experience standards of Penn Medicine, reflecting its mission and embedded in professional practice competency domains.

The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is responsible for delivering direct care to patients across all age groups, demonstrating competencies in Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, Leadership, Person and Family-Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/Informatics.

This role collaborates closely with the interprofessional healthcare team to ensure seamless care coordination throughout the continuum. The nurse focuses on acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care, considering physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age-appropriate factors for assigned patients.

The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice will seek guidance from seasoned clinicians and will benefit from constructive feedback while progressing in the ability to manage increasingly complex patient needs. The nurse illustrates how nursing practice aligns with the organizational vision, mission, and goals, as well as the care delivery system. Compliance with all regulatory and accrediting standards is mandatory.

The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is expected to complete all required competencies and is anticipated to advance to the Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague level within 18 months of professional practice.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Incorporate the mission, vision, and values of Lancaster General Health into patient care planning.
  • Function as both an independent and collaborative member of the healthcare team as outlined in the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Conduct patient assessments, focusing on physiological, psychological, and cognitive functions. Evaluate progress towards goals and adjust care plans based on recognized trends and changes. Collect and manage comprehensive data relevant to the patient's health.
  • Analyze assessment data to identify diagnoses or issues. Develop age-appropriate and culturally sensitive care plans.
  • Implement care knowledgeably and coordinate patient care across various disciplines and caregivers.
  • Provide leadership to team members by clearly communicating expected care standards and supporting their contributions.
  • Demonstrate commitment to values of privacy, quality, respect, service, and teamwork.
  • Assign, delegate, and supervise other staff, ensuring the care plan is executed, continuity of care is maintained, and established outcomes are achieved through effective resource utilization.
  • Educate patients on healthy practices and treatment options.
  • Continuously enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices, utilizing technology as appropriate.
  • Consider safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in planning and delivering nursing services.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage rapidly changing situations according to established protocols, coordinating with appropriate health team members and resources, and documenting events.
  • Engage in process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing continuity in nurse-patient relationships, reducing redundancies, and developing new methods and procedures.
  • Complete mandatory training, including age-specific needs, caring behaviors, and interpersonal skills as defined by the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to evidence-based practice policies and promptly reporting safety variances.
  • Exhibit pride in work through daily interactions with staff, colleagues, patients, and others.
  • Pursue experiences and learning activities to develop clinical and professional skills and knowledge.
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and mentoring to peers and subordinates to enhance learning experiences and improve the professional practice environment.
  • Participate in the employee performance process for peers and subordinates; address employee issues as the first level of supervision; evaluate performance post-hire.
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current RN Licensure issued by the PA Board of Nursing or a Temporary Practice Permit until an RN license is obtained.
  • Individuals with Temporary Practice Permits must take the NCLEX within 60 days of starting in their RN role.
  • A graduate registered nurse may only practice under supervision and must hold a current temporary practice permit. Supervision requires a licensed registered nurse to be physically present in the area where the graduate registered nurse is practicing.
  • All Clinical Nurse 1 RNs must successfully complete the Nurse Residency Program.
  • CPR Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be a healthcare provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • As outlined in the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. For Magnet-designated RN positions, a BSN or higher nursing degree is required based on previously established parameters; or within two years of placement in position for incumbents who started after specified date.
