Job OverviewThe Surgical Instrumentation Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the continued flow of equipment and instrumentation through SPD. Adequately planning, requisitioning, storing, and consulting with Operating Room Service Leaders and nursing personnel are key responsibilities. The supervisor coordinates SPD activities with nursing staff and service leaders, develops timely problem resolutions, and consults with the Materials Manager to maintain equipment and supplies.
One of the critical tasks of this role is to provide input in interviews of new applicants for department positions. Maintaining quality processes on all shifts, providing training, performing annual Competency Assessments, and assisting with evaluations for department staff are essential duties. The supervisor also assists with Quality Improvement processes and coordinates all SPD staff activities to consistently accomplish department goals.
In addition, the supervisor is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments and medical errors. Ensuring that the department is in compliance with all applicable policies, laws, and regulations is a vital responsibility.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
* A High School diploma or equivalent
* Successful completion of a SPD/CS Training course; CBSPD or IACHSMM certification as a technician
* Supervisor certification within two years of accepting the position
* Three to five years of SPD experience, including comprehensive knowledge of surgical instruments
Scheduling Requirements
This role requires a Full-Time commitment, working an Evening Shift, with 40 hours per week.
Essential Functions
Key responsibilities include:
* Ensuring an adequate level of supplies, trays, and patient care equipment to meet patient needs
* Accurate record keeping of all pertinent records; ensuring payroll is correctly completed; ensuring work schedules are completed
* Maintaining work orders and calling for necessary service
* Identifying autoclaving cycles and understanding biological and chemical monitoring
* Operating the Sterrad sterilizer and maintaining biological and chemical indicators
* Periodic review and update of departmental Policies and Procedures
* Ensuring accurate record keeping of all pertinent records; ensuring payroll is correctly completed; ensuring work schedules are completed
* Maintaining and understanding the importance of personal protection equipment
* Providing inservices as needed and participating in new employee orientation and maintaining pertinent records
* Making recommendations to improve quality and efficiency of productivity
* Demonstrating knowledge of Administrative and Departmental policies and procedures; demonstrating knowledge and ability to perform all services provided by the department
* Evaluating performance of staff; preparing performance evaluations appropriately
* Ensuring quality and quantity of work performed meets departmental standards
* Evaluating performance of subordinates; interviewing prospective candidates
* Assisting OR through QI projects as needed
