Position Summary:

The Fiber Optic Technician is essential in delivering high-quality telecommunications services. This role involves interpreting technical schematics and diagrams to splice, terminate, and test fiber-optic, coaxial, and copper cables for new installations. Additionally, the technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing any damaged cables within the outside plant network.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Construction Managers and OSP Engineers to execute splicing tasks as instructed;
  • Provide comprehensive reports on field splicing activities;
  • Prepare cables and perform both fusion and mechanical splices for various applications;
  • Ensure all splice closures and termination points are secure and moisture-free;
  • Install protective equipment and demarcation devices at customer locations;
  • Inspect and document the condition of vaults, mini-vaults, and manholes to maintain network integrity;
  • Install active and passive devices such as nodes, amplifiers, taps, and splitters;
  • Exhibit strong customer service skills, particularly in interactions with landowners and utility providers;
  • Ensure proper bonding and grounding of both aerial and underground installations;
  • Adhere to industry standards and company policies, including compliance with OSHA, DOT, and FCC regulations;
  • Track and log time for capital projects as necessary;
  • Participate in on-call rotations and perform work during scheduled maintenance periods;
  • Travel to various job sites and company locations as required;
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of telecommunications construction practices, including:
    • Installation procedures for fiber and cable;
    • Identification of individual fiber cables at splice and node locations;
    • Handling and maintenance of fiber optic splice enclosures;
    • Understanding depth and distance requirements;
    • Marking and identifying cable routes and types;
    • Restoration of work areas and management of easements/right of way;
    • Emergency service restoration protocols.
  • Familiarity with RUS and NEC Standards as well as FCC, OSHA, and DOT regulations;
  • Knowledge of company products, services, policies, and procedures;
  • Proficiency in using RF meters, optical meters, spectrum analyzers, TDR, OTDR, and other monitoring tools;
  • Basic skills in PC software such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and Auto Cad Map Viewer;
  • Ability to read and interpret cable schematics and reports;
  • Strong communication skills for professional interactions;
  • Capacity to follow detailed instructions for complex tasks;
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently;
  • Team player mentality with sound decision-making skills;
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and safely tow trailers or equipment;
  • Willingness to travel for business purposes and possess a valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of five years of experience in telecommunications construction or maintenance. At least three years of fiber splicing experience is preferred.
