Position Overview:Tired of the hustle and bustle of urban life? The Northwest New Mexico Council of Governments (COG) is seeking to expand its team with several exciting opportunities based in the vibrant Downtown Gallup. This is your chance to be part of a dedicated team focused on regional development in the picturesque Four Corners area.
Job Summary:
The Junior Urban Planner will engage in a diverse array of planning initiatives, project development, grant writing, and technical support tasks for various stakeholders, including local governments and funding partners. This role may involve working independently, as part of a team, or through specific assignments.
Qualifications:
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required, or actively pursuing such a degree, ideally in fields related to urban planning or community development. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Experience: A minimum of two years in professional or internship roles related to community planning, public administration, project management, or similar fields is essential. Relevant academic coursework and technical skills may substitute for experience; familiarity with the northwest New Mexico area is preferred.
- Writing Skills: Strong ability to independently draft and edit various documents, including reports and proposals, is necessary. The candidate should be able to create written materials based on general guidance and represent findings in multiple formats.
- Analytical Skills: The ability to comprehend and evaluate a variety of professional materials and conduct thorough research is required.
- Organizational Skills: The candidate must demonstrate the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks efficiently.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in current computer software for document creation and editing is required. Familiarity with GIS, social media, and web development is a plus.
- Member Services: Provide planning and technical assistance to COG member governments and on grant-funded initiatives.
- Research: Conduct in-depth research on various topics relevant to the organization’s projects and prepare comprehensive reports.
- Data Management: Assist in managing the COG's digital platforms, including social media and document databases.
- Technical Writing: Develop technical documents, grant applications, and other correspondence for internal and external stakeholders.
- Meeting Support: Aid in the preparation and documentation of meetings and workshops.
- Project Support: Provide logistical and technical support for assigned projects.
- Inter-agency Liaison: Facilitate communication between agencies and prepare reports as necessary.

- Residency: Candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the COG headquarters.
