Position Overview:

The Cardiac Sonography Technician is responsible for generating two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasonic recordings, along with Doppler flow analyses of cardiac structures. These recordings assist Physicians in diagnosing cardiovascular conditions and conducting comprehensive cardiac studies. The role may require flexible working hours and participation in an on-call schedule. The technician is accountable for the quality of echocardiographic examinations and utilizes clinical judgment to determine the necessity for additional testing protocols. Responsibilities include assessing, preparing, and executing echocardiographic evaluations (M-mode, 2D, 3D Doppler, transesophageal, and stress tests). The technician also provides emotional support and ensures the physical comfort and safety of patients and visitors. Maintenance of equipment and the work area is essential, along with assisting with other assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts echocardiograms in accordance with established imaging protocols, ensuring adherence to ASE standards while delivering high-quality patient care.
  • Engages consistently in Adult Echo/Stress/TEE/Call Coverage, which may include pediatric cases.
  • Identifies arrhythmias and takes appropriate action by alerting the physician in cases of abnormal EKG readings, such as acute myocardial infarction or significant heart block.
  • Evaluates the quality of electrocardiographic and echocardiographic recordings, addressing deficiencies when possible. If unable to rectify issues, documents findings accordingly and provides technical insights to the physician post-examination.
  • Accurately documents patient and procedural information in medical records, ensuring a completion rate of 98% for charges.
  • Educates patients and their families about procedures, documenting the educational process in the patient record.
  • Responds effectively in emergency situations.
  • Utilizes equipment following established protocols and refers to manuals as necessary. Notifies the coordinator/manager of any equipment requiring repair and processes the necessary paperwork.
  • Ensures that inventories and medical supplies are adequately stocked, informing the appropriate personnel when supplies are low.
  • Assists in orienting new staff and documents their progress on orientation records.
  • Contributes to data collection for the SQI program.
  • Participates in at least 70% of departmental educational programs and staff meetings, attending all mandatory in-services or scheduling make-up sessions. Takes personal responsibility for ongoing education to maintain current knowledge in the field and keeps CPR certification up to date.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate Degree and/or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited program preferred.

Certifications:

  • CPR Certification required.
  • RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer) by the ARDMS Board or RCS by the CCI Board registered or registry eligible.
  • Must obtain RCS registration in adult echo within one year.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the employee to regularly stand, walk, use hands for handling or feeling, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, talk, and hear. Occasionally, the employee may need to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required include frequent adjustments of focus and occasional distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally exert up to 100 pounds of force.
