Position Overview:
The Fiber Optic Construction Technician is tasked with the splicing of various sizes of fiber optic and copper cables in both outdoor and indoor environments. This role involves reading, creating, and maintaining splicing schematics and diagrams while overseeing outside plant (OSP) activities related to assigned work sites, ensuring project timelines are met.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring crew safety by directing procedures related to road safety, manhole safety, and general project oversight.
  • Maintaining accurate daily records, including fiber route details, slack locations, and splice locations, while updating drawings as necessary.
  • Managing material inventory and conducting DOT vehicle inspections.
  • Performing outside plant construction tasks and other duties as assigned.

This position may require work on weekends, holidays, standby, unscheduled hours, and overtime, with travel expectations exceeding 50% of the year based on business needs.


Key Responsibilities:
The technician will:

  • Splice cables using hand tools, epoxy, or mechanical equipment as needed.
  • Handle both loose tube and ribbon optic cables, constructing appropriate splice cases, including grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing.
  • Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Interpret staking sheets and blueprints accurately.
  • Conduct work in accordance with industry standards and RUS standards, adhering to design engineers' instructions and safety procedures.
  • Participate in engineering, permit, and construction processes to support project contracts.
  • Measure signal strength at utility poles using electronic test equipment.
  • Inspect or test lines or cables, recording and analyzing results to assess transmission characteristics and identify faults.
  • Perform routine maintenance and address route issues as necessary.

Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:

  • The ability to lift/push/pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Experience working in various weather conditions year-round.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • A valid driver's license and minimum qualifications to obtain a CDL.
  • Exceptional time-management skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will have:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience, including pole climbing.
  • OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course and Buck Squeeze (Pole Climbing Certifications).
  • Proficiency in operating various construction equipment.
  • At least 1 year of copper and/or fiber cable splicing experience or related Trade School certification.

Working Environment:
The role involves using test equipment, ladders, climbing hooks, hand and power tools, and heavy-duty equipment.
