Position Overview:
This role involves delivering essential therapeutic and diagnostic interventions across general care units and specialized care areas. The specialist plays a crucial role in enhancing patient cardiopulmonary health through the administration of various medications, gases, and therapeutic devices. The position operates under the direct oversight of a licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner, with a focus on either adult or neonatal/pediatric respiratory care. This role embodies the mission, vision, and values of Rush and adheres to established policies and procedures.

Key Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a CoARC accredited Respiratory Care program.
  • New graduates must secure the State of Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner license and the NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist credential within three months of graduation or hire.
  • Completion of departmental competencies in critical care and/or neonatal/pediatric care.
  • BLS certification is mandatory upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ACLS certification for adult care.
  • PALS/NRP certification for neonatal/pediatric care.

Physical Requirements:
Must be capable of standing, walking, pushing, and bending for a significant portion of the day. Ability to lift 20 pounds is necessary for handling medical equipment.

Essential Competencies:

  • Technical proficiency to modify equipment and procedures according to patient needs.
  • Analytical abilities to assess patient responses to therapies.
  • Strong customer service skills to effectively engage with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer and monitor mechanical ventilation; provide ventilator recommendations based on clinical assessments.
  • Deliver bronchial hygiene and treatment procedures, including aerosol therapies and therapeutic gas administration.
  • Conduct clinical assessments of patients before and after administering medications or therapies.
  • Apply CPAP and NIV, making recommendations based on patient compliance and clinical data.
  • Engage in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Quality Assurance (QA) initiatives.
  • Document patient care activities accurately and timely in medical records.
  • Assess patient oxygenation and ventilation through various monitoring techniques.
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding respiratory care.
