Job Summary

The Backend Engineer Role at Hive involves growing our team of best-in-class engineers who can launch new products and features into production, work autonomously, try new technologies, and tackle scale challenges. Our ideal candidate has experience building core services and web-based APIs from scratch, cares about product technology synergy, and writes clean, maintainable code.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement or improve features in various backend systems including REST APIs, microservices, data ingestion and processing systems, and distributed task/job processing systems
  • Write and maintain scalable, performant, and secure code for shared platforms
  • Contribute meaningfully to the product and core backend systems through suggested and executed improvements
  • Enhance engineering standards, tooling, processes, and security
  • Practice test-driven development
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple stack levels
  • Participate in on-call rotations as needed for prompt resolution of critical technical issues
  • Use OWASP top 10 techniques to secure code against vulnerabilities
  • Maintain awareness of industry best practices for data handling relevant to your role
  • Adhere to policies, guidelines, and procedures for information asset protection
  • Report actual or suspected security and/or policy violations/breaches to an appropriate authority

Requirements

  • You hold a Bachelor's Degree in computer science or a related field
  • You have experience building web applications with several years under your belt
  • You have experience writing applications in Node.js or a strong interest in doing so
  • You have experience implementing highly-available distributed systems/microservices
  • You have experience building scalable backend APIs
  • You have experience working with relational databases, with Postgres being preferred
  • Understanding monitoring and alerting platforms is a plus
  • You strongly believe in high code quality, automated testing, and other engineering best practices
  • You have attention to detail and a passion for correctness
  • You are comfortable learning new technologies and systems
  • You possess strong interpersonal and communication skills with a bias towards action

Compensation

The estimated annual salary for this position ranges from $120,000 - $180,000. This figure may vary based on factors such as qualifications, location, and experience. In addition to base pay, stock options may be offered as part of the total compensation package.
