Position Overview
The Senior Underwriter for Middle Market Industries is responsible for making informed decisions regarding the underwriting of business by utilizing analytical and data-driven approaches based on the information provided, including risk pricing. In specific regions of North America, this role may involve underwriting complex or atypical policies, including those with significant individual line sizes.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversees a portfolio of brokers, agents, and clients, leveraging market expertise to develop and underwrite profitable business while representing Liberty Mutual.
- Maintains a robust market presence, fostering established relationships with agents and brokers, while seeking to enhance these connections and cultivate new ones.
- Contributes innovative ideas for product development and engages in the execution of such initiatives. Participates in team projects aimed at process and tool enhancements. Understands the implications of relevant legislation and regulations.
- Collaborates effectively with various teams, stakeholders, and partners (e.g., Underwriting Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting in GRS North America). Provides mentorship to junior underwriters and new hires, without serving as a direct line manager.
- May analyze the department's portfolio and offer suggestions for development. Recognizes and communicates emerging trends within areas of business expertise.
- A degree in Business or a related field is typically required.
- A minimum of 2.5 years, usually 3 or more years, of progressive underwriting experience or related experience.
- CPCU or a professional insurance designation is preferred.
- Demonstrated analytical skills to assess and evaluate underwriting risks within the scope of responsibility, including proficiency in all phases of the underwriting process and the use of qualitative and quantitative tools.
- Must exhibit a thorough understanding of complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to effectively manage those issues.
- Proven history of developing and underwriting profitable business.
