Overview:
The Surgical First Assistant plays a crucial role in the operating room, providing essential support to the surgeon during surgical procedures. This position is defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and encompasses a range of responsibilities that ensure the safety and efficacy of surgical operations.
In addition to assisting during surgeries, the Surgical First Assistant is involved in preoperative and postoperative care, contributing to comprehensive patient management.
Working under the guidance of the surgeon, the Surgical First Assistant adheres to hospital policies and complies with relevant laws and regulations, ensuring a high standard of care.

Key Responsibilities:
- Exhibit proficiency in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, including leadership and teamwork.
- Assist the surgeon throughout all phases of surgical procedures, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative tasks.
- Ensure the safe positioning of patients, taking into account the surgeon's preferences and the specific requirements of the surgical procedure.
- Placement of Foley catheters
- Application of tourniquets
- Insertion of intravenous catheters
- Administration of cricoid pressure
- Perform specialized tasks based on the surgeon's preferences, utilizing appropriate techniques for incision, closure, and tissue manipulation.
- Apply dressings and assess skin integrity, ensuring the patient's comfort and safety.
- Assist in patient transfer and follow the patient to recovery as directed by the surgeon.
- Execute additional procedures under the supervision of the surgeon, including vein and graft harvesting.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned by the surgeon, in alignment with state and local regulations.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of an accredited Surgical First Assistant Program or a State Board accredited Vocational School of Nursing is mandatory. A background of 2 years in Surgical Technology is preferred. BLS certification is required, while ACLS certification is preferred.

Varies based on operational needs.
