Maintenance Custodian Job Description

The Maintenance Custodian plays a vital role in ensuring the cleanliness and safety of Ivy Tech Community College Richmond facilities and grounds. This position is responsible for performing routine cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance tasks as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Cleans and sanitizes floors, ramps, and stairs using various methods, including sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming.
  • Servicing and cleaning restrooms, classrooms, labs, and common spaces, including emptying recycling and trash.
  • Cleans and polishes fixtures, windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
  • Mixes cleaning solutions according to specifications and dusts furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Removes trash and waste, including biohazardous materials, and completes assigned work orders on time.
  • Performs seasonal tasks outside as assigned and loads/unloads equipment, furniture, and supplies as directed.
  • Operates grounds, maintenance, and custodial equipment and performs first echelon maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists with special events as directed and performs carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning.
  • Strips, seals, finishes, and polishes floors and performs light building maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including climbing ladders and working at heights above ground level.
Requirements:
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner and ability to work in the afternoon into the later evening.
  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills and basic computer literacy skills.
  • Demonstrate time management and priority setting skills and possess flexibility to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Highly thorough and dependable, with excellent organizational skills and knowledge of cleaning procedures and equipment.
  • Ability to follow safe work practices in biohazard and/or hazardous waste clean-up and ability to lift and move 70lbs.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment and ability to become proficient in required computer software.
Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or equivalent and valid driver's license and meet insurability requirements under Ivy Tech Community College's driver insurance program.
  • Two years related work experience preferred.
