At The University of Kansas Health System, we are seeking a skilled Critical Care Patient Care Tech to join our team in Olathe, Kansas. As a Critical Care Patient Care Tech, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our clinical staff. This is a part-time position working nights, with a schedule that includes PRN hours from 6:45pm to 7:15am.

About the Job

This position involves cross-training in the roles of Unit Secretary and Unit Assistant/Nurse Tech, under the direct supervision of a Nurse. You will be responsible for providing direct patient care, technical assistance to nurses, and performing various computer, clerical, scheduling, and supply functions necessary for the operation of the unit. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role, as you will need to communicate effectively using tact and sensitivity. Self-motivation and the ability to work with limited supervision are also crucial.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for admission, transfers, and discharges by securing IV pumps, zeroing beds, and updating whiteboards with current information.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment by cleaning equipment, using infection control techniques, reporting damaged or malfunctioning equipment, and storing supplies properly.
  • Complete daily duties such as hygiene, vital signs, nutritional assistance, weight/height measurements, ambulation, fingerstick blood sugar testing, and measuring intake/output.
  • Rounds on patients, answers call lights promptly, and uses excellent customer service techniques.
  • Introduces self to patients and families, communicates information to nurses and shift coordinators, and reports unusual incidents or changes in patient condition.
  • Uses technology appropriately, enters data, secures data, and accurately enters orders and charges into the computer system.
  • Manages time, prioritizes tasks, and makes decisions regarding patient care.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should have a High School Diploma or GED, and C.N.A certification if not having a diploma or GED. Previous healthcare experience is preferred, and CPR/AED/BLS certification is required within 14 days. A strong knowledge of emergency procedures and ability to remain calm in stressful situations are essential.
