Livermore California, United States LLNL Full time
Job Overview

We are seeking qualified candidates for the position of Lead Research Scientist in Explosives Experimentation.

Your primary responsibility will be to spearhead experimental initiatives, with minimal supervision, utilizing high explosives and various energetic materials. This role is integral to the management of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, conventional weaponry development, counterterrorism strategies, and collaborations with commercial entities.

Work Environment

This position may offer a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for a combination of in-office and remote work. Flexibility to work from home on designated days may be available.

The role will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level, contingent upon your expertise, skills, and experience as evaluated by the hiring team.

Key Responsibilities

In this capacity, you will:

1. Design, implement, assess, and interpret experiments driven by explosives in collaboration with diagnostic operators, fellow scientists, and senior technical staff, independently and at various advanced facilities across the DOE weapons complex.

2. Oversee multiple concurrent, intricate experiments at various phases of development and execution.

3. Lead innovative scientific and engineering projects aimed at enhancing the design of hydrodynamic experiments, leveraging your knowledge and expertise.

4. Establish experimental requirements and supervise the execution of the various components of the experiments.

5. Advocate for and facilitate the integration of advanced diagnostic and data analysis techniques for explosively driven hydrodynamic experiments, collaborating with diagnostic designers to develop and implement new capabilities.

6. Conduct technical quality assurance evaluations on these experiments, including overseeing the setup, alignment, and execution of confirmatory dry runs to ensure optimal data quality within budgetary constraints.

7. Analyze and interpret complex experimental data, document findings, identify challenges, plan solutions, and communicate insights effectively.

8. Present and share research findings with stakeholders, documenting experiments and results in both open and classified settings.

9. Promote and support initiatives that foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability within the workplace.

10. Travel as required based on project needs.

11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities at SES.4 Level

At the SES.4 level, you will:

1. Develop specialized expertise in related fields of physics, diagnostic methodologies, or data analysis techniques crucial for the design and execution of hydrodynamic experiments.

2. Proactively identify potential project challenges and allocate resources to devise effective solutions, enhancing efficiency in key areas pertinent to hydrodynamic experiments.

3. Lead projects that require collaboration with the broader scientific community beyond LLNL.
