Diagnostic Imaging Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sonographer/Technologist to join our team at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems. As a key member of our diagnostic imaging team, you will be responsible for performing high-quality ultrasound procedures and related techniques to provide diagnostic information to licensed independent practitioners.
Key Responsibilities- Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures and examinations upon the order of or for diagnostic interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner.
- Determine ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomic area of interest.
- Assist licensed independent practitioners with interventional procedures such as needle localizations, aspirations, biopsies, drainages, etc.
- Maintain accurate records, respecting confidentiality and established policy.
- Apply principles of patient safety during all aspects of procedures, including assisting and transporting patients.
- Receive, relay, and document verbal, written, and electronic imaging orders in the patient's medical record.
- Corroborate patient's clinical history with the ordered procedure while ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed independent practitioner.
- Verify informed consent.
- Assume responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures.
- Prepare patients for procedures.
- Apply principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.
- Perform venipuncture per procedural protocol based on imaging order from a licensed independent practitioner.
- Start and maintain intravenous access per procedural protocol based on an imaging order for a licensed independent practitioner.
- Identify, prepare, and/or administer medications generally associated with diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.
- Evaluate images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.
- Identify and escalate emergency situations and manage until appropriate licensed independent practitioner, EMS, MERT, RRT, or Code Team arrives to assume control.
- Provide patient education related to imaging procedure.
- Educate, mentor, and provide general oversight of students and other learners in the Radiology environment.
- Participate and/or perform ongoing quality assurance activities.
- Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) as a sonographer ARRT(S) or RDMS or CCI certification in medical sonography or RDCS certification in cardiac sonography or RVT certification as Vascular Technologist.
- Current Certification by ARRT (S) or RDMS or RDCS or CCI or RVT Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers).
- One (1) year of previous work experience as an Sonographer/Technologist.
- Preferred: One (1)-3 years of previous work experience as an Sonographer/Technologist, previous work experience in an academic medical center environment, and a Bachelor's Degree in a radiologic technology, sonography, or vascular sonography.
This position requires prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and walking (distance). The physical demands of this job include lifting 20-50 lbs. The mental/sensory demands include strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The emotional demands include working in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, and adapting to frequent change.
