About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Fluidics Engineer to join our team at Roche Holdings Inc. in Carlsbad, CA. As a key member of our R&D team, you will be responsible for providing technical direction and expertise in the implementation of electrowetting and microfluidics technology in IVD consumables and instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define the technical direction for designing electrowetting and fluidics experiments based on requirements for the production of consumable PCBs for electrowetting technology.
  • Collaborate with detection, engineering, and assay development teams to understand company requirements and needs and translate them to innovative electrowetting and fluidics technologies.
  • Develop and maintain a strong infrastructure for Electrowetting and Fluidics research and development.
  • Lead critical work in electrowetting failure analysis, inspections, and test method development when needed.
  • Provide engineering and troubleshooting support to assay integration and development teams.
  • Define requirements for electrowetting systems with the ability to use various hydrophobic layers on many varieties of substrates.
  • Work with production teams to transfer verified designs within R&D into full production.
  • Collaborate with Technical Support teams and assist production and contract manufacturers as new problems arise.
  • Interact with suppliers and contract manufacturers from time to time to ensure parts and assemblies are produced against material specifications reliably.
  • Act as the thought leader in fluidics related to product design, analysis, and development of components and assemblies, including assembly, part drawings, and manufacturing transfer.
  • Perform and document feasibility, design, verification, validation, and risk analysis activities under design controls within the new product development process potentially working alongside outsourced partners.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering with 3+ years of experience in electrowetting applications within a medical device company.
  • Highly skilled at designing, developing, and sustaining medical or in-vitro diagnostics consumables using electrowetting and other fluidics technologies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience with microfluidics and Electrowetting.
  • Proficient with root cause analysis, data analysis, and tolerance analysis techniques.
  • Demonstrated level of expertise with the layout of complex electrowetting on PCB, applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, microfluidics, and materials.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in designing experiments for lab-on-a-chip devices with microelectronics.
  • Demonstrated experience in fluidics devices designs, rapid prototyping, prototype molding, and multi-cavity production molds.
  • Experience with assembly techniques associated with electrowetting assemblies.
  • Demonstrated level of experience with MCAD (Solidworks preferred) and ECAD (Altium preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in data acquisition and instrument control programming platforms, such as Lab VIEW or Matlab.
  • Experience with modeling tools, such as FEA or CFD.
Work Environment

The essential functions of the job are usually performed in an environmentally controlled facility where the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position may involve a combination of office and biotechnology laboratory environments. The employee may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, blood-borne pathogens, and automated equipment.

While performing the job duties, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee may sometimes be required to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
