Job Description / Essential Elements:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Associate Superintendent of Instructional Services, and/or designated on-site school administrator; exercises technical and functional supervision of student assistants assigned to the Career Center, which includes training and evaluation of those students.

The Career Education Technician will:

  • perform assigned duties independently;
  • develop, organize, acquire, evaluate, maintain, update, and disseminate educational/vocational career planning information and resources;
  • administer and interpret self-awareness assessments;
  • instruct students involved with research/exploration of educational/vocational career opportunities for the purpose of formulating career goals.

The primary function of the Career Education Technician is to serve the needs of CTE programs within the SUHSD.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Facilitates the operation and supervision of a Career Center for senior high school, and serves as liaison between CTE programs and students, parents, administration, and staff.

Demonstrate self-directed interest in the nature of the work; develop on-going relationships with and serve as the communication link among SUHSD CTE programs and high school administration, staff, students, and parents.

Promote integration of CTE courses into home school/district career pathway programs by participation in development/implementation task forces, as requested, emphasizing importance of increased vocational/academic integration, and career education and guidance activities in this process.

Establish and maintain good public relations by advertising and advising students as well as the community of current, up-to-date information on Career Center information/activities through a variety of activities; i.e., CTE program course offering booklet/brochures, daily bulletins, bulletin board presentations and displays, newspaper articles, Career Center orientations, public speaking engagements, participation in community career-related functions, participation in education and career-related functions offered by Shasta Community College, etc.

Recruit students (and/or adults) for, and assist counseling staff with, registration in CTE courses.

Maintain CTE student information with regard to: attendance, issue CTE readmits, investigate drop information and report to CTE instructors, receive and process progress/deficiency reports and forward to counselors, collect quarter and semester grades and process/report to home school, follow up on CTE textbook/supply bills and advise appropriate home school officials.

Work cooperatively with respective high school and CTE administrations in coordinating transportation for CTE students between their home school and other classes/community classroom sites, where applicable.

Notify CTE instructors and administration when special school schedule changes occur.

Assist CTE instructors in coordinating home school and CTE field trip policies.

Conduct Career Center orientations and presentations in the areas of career exploration/research and/or job-seeking skills (application, resume writing, interviewing, etc.), upon request, for/with CTE and home school students, instructors, counselors, etc., for the purpose of class projects or assignments.

May necessitate research and development of career units relevant to specific class(es).

Order, receive, maintain and update college/career resources, equipment, and computer hardware and software utilized by and residing in assigned Career Center; develop proficiency to instruct/supervise others in their use.

Assist and advise students as they consider their options in relation to post-secondary training and educational opportunities, to include such considerations as: certificate programs, community colleges, trade & technical schools, apprenticeship programs, and four-year colleges and universities.

Work with counselors, or independently, to schedule, administer, and interpret annual career inventories/assessments with students, either in class groups or individually by referral, according to assigned school's career education four-year plans.

May include assistance with development and use of individual student career portfolios/four-year plans.

Use assessment results to identify and refer students, according to their interests, to CTE or career pathways, as well as to plan events and activities scheduled in and by the Career Center, such as CTE instructor presentations, college/career/military/ professional guest speakers/representatives.

Present a written, quarterly report to Associate Superintendent of Instructional Services describing and evaluating activities performed in the Career Center for the previous quarter.

Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Career Education Technician performs a variety of job-related duties within a framework of established procedures, some of which may be unique to each high school, as required.

This requires a high level of independent judgment with only occasional instruction or assistance.

The In addition to performing the full range of duties and responsibilities, the Career Education Technician possesses technical/functional expertise and is expected to carry out necessary activities independently.

The Career Education Technician is an advanced level specialist position.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Resources for information pertaining to vocational and educational opportunities, as well as how to order/acquire them for Career Center use.

Career exploration software relevant to CTE.

Modern office practices, procedures and recordkeeping.

Computer operation and software use.

Correct English grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and composition.

Methods and procedures used in administering, scoring and interpreting vocational assessment instruments.

Local referral agencies, community and state colleges/universities.

ABILITY TO:

Foster, establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Learn the operations, services and activities of the CTE and assigned school/district.

Learn, interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.

Organize and manage numerous duties/responsibilities.

Communicate and interact effectively in both oral and written forms.

Execute written and verbal instructions.

Exercise good judgment, tact and sensitivity to skillfully receive, evaluate and handle inquiries, problems or concerns.

Be flexible and cooperative when faced with new and changing situations.

Read, understand, and utilize technical, procedural, and instructional material.

Administer, score and interpret career planning vocational/educational assessments.

Collect, compile and evaluate information and data.

Network and make appropriate referrals with colleagues.

Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Be creative in techniques to publicize CTE training programs, student achievements, and Career Center activities.

Pass CTE Career Education Technician test with a score of 80% or higher.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Equivalent of the twelfth grade, preferably supplemented by course work in career education and guidance.

Minimum two years of responsible employment in business or industry involving direct and heavy personal contact responsibilities, such as in personnel training, tutoring, human relations, or similar assignments, preferably in an educational or public agency setting.

Any combination equivalent to experience and training (as outlined above) that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.

Some verifiable work experience with high school-age students is preferred.

Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

May occasionally lift and stack heavy objects not to exceed 25 lbs.
