Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of a licensed counselor, Academic Trainers primarily assist with the coordination and delivery of outreach, psychoeducational, and support services for Counseling and Disability Services.

This position requires the trainee to work collaboratively on planning teams and to serve as a liaison with University partners (ie. faculty, Residential Life, etc.).

Academic Trainers assist in planning, coordinating, and facilitating groups, workshops, seminars, presentations, and activities to promote the mental health wellbeing of students and the overall mission of Counseling and Disability Services.

Academic Trainers provide peer mentorship and work collaboratively with students to promote personal wellness, raise awareness, provide education, and service as a resource to students on a wide variety of mental health issues.

The purpose of this position is to provide a training experience that reinforces the learning objectives related to the employee's major field of study.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCoordination and Outreach

Plans, coordinates, and provides outreach and psychoeducational programs and activities to the campus community (weekly drop-in events, mental health campaigns to reduce stigma, promoting self-help tools and resources, series and forums, skills building groups).

Coordinates the use of social media, marketing, and advertising to promote mental health awareness, and to reduce stigma and barriers.

Serves as a liaison to University departments. Provides psychoeducational presentations and workshops to increase awareness of mental health.

Peer Mentorship

Meets individually with students to discuss lighter concerns, link to Counseling Services when necessary, as well as to university, community resources, and/or peer advocacy.

Supportive Duties

Assists with the evaluation of program services by collecting and organizing data (surveys).

Provides support to front office operations.

Consults with supervisor and staff as needed.

Attends staff meetings and supervision on a weekly basis and in a prompt manner.

Represents the department and division at campus events as requested.

Interacts with staff and students in a professional and ethical manner.

Participates in supervision and training with an openness to learning and receiving feedback.

Performs additional job-related duties and responsibilities as requested.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge and skills in counseling practices.

Ability to plan, implement, evaluate and report activities conducted.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing and to prepare written and electronic documents.

Ability to communicate orally, both in person and by telephone.

Ability to establish rapport with others as a requisite for healthy relationships.

Ability to present oneself in an appropriately personable and professional manner to students and staff.

Ability to receive and utilize constructive feedback regarding performance, presentation and relationships with others.

Ability to be both consistent and flexible as circumstances warrant.

Ability to communicate via computer email.

Must understand Confidentiality FERPA, HIPPA and child abuse mandating reporting laws.

Possess good people skills, organization skills, communication skills, takes initiative, and has creativity.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Social Work or Psychology (Required)

One year general experience

Work Environment

Hourly Rate: $16.00
